CHICAGO GRAIN AND PROVISION.
Pea 4 a res of th Tradlna- and Closing
Prices on Board ot Trade.
CIIIOAOO. Jan. 81. Wall street weak
iicns that was associated here with pos
sibilities or complications with foreign
governments brought about u decided sot
back in who-it values todsy after an early
advance. The close was heavy. lMfl'tc
to 2'-ifi2Ve net loner, with May $1.81Ts and
July $1.23'.
Other leading staples, too, all finished
at a loss corn, oals, li. and
provisions, 7Sc to Nc.
Breaks In the nrice of wheat followed
one another swiftly once the market he -
gan to give wav. Bullish news wn
Ifc-nored, and traders took little heed of
anything, but the fact that stocks in New
York had suffered a tumble, and that In
this connection gossip here was busy with
reports that serious chancre of Interns-
tlonal differences for the United Slates
lay behind the punilo utterances or
President Wilson. The result was an
ton
figures of the day. Much of the selling
on the way down was of sn unmistakable
stop loss character. Profit taking by
shorts, however, assumed sufficient
volume to ci:e III sustained rallies near
the close.
Announcement that ths railways enter
ing Galveston had placed an embargo on
wheat shipments to that port cut some
Importance as a discouragement to the
bulla, who In the first part of ths session
had lifted the market without a great
deal of trouble.
The basis of ths temporary advance
was chiefly a forecast by a leading
authority that shipments from Australia
and Argentine were not likely to be on a
lartte scale at any time during February.
Com weakened with wheat. Unfavor
able weoi'.-r formed the main reason for
a preceding transient upturn
Oats were relatively bearish throughout
the days as compared with corn. Re
celpta were larger and eastern demand
alow.
Falling off In exports had depressing
influence on provisions. The market was
also affected somewhat by the general
unloading by holders In other lines.

CATTLE Receipts of cattle were tight
this morning, only 8.000 head being re
ported In, as against 8J18 a week ago
and 4.13K a year ago. The demand for
beef steers, cows and heifers wae very
fair, but still the trade was a little slow
for ths reason that sellers were deter
mined to fores the market higher, while
buyers were a little backward about rais
ing their bids. Perhaps to quota the
trade as slow, steady to 10o higher would
just about cover the situation.

HOOR A moderate Monday supply
was on hand thla morning, ths esti
mate calling for 118 cars, or 8,600 head.
This Is smaller than for any Monday In
weeks, being 2,000 short of a wsek ago,
mors than 2.000 smaller than two weeks
ago and a falling off of 2,600 hesd at
compared last year.
Under the Influenoa of encouraging ad
vices from all other points tns market
opened out with shippers buying; a good
many hogs at prices that wars a Ditj So
to as muoh as a dims higher than Sat
urday. They bought freely around $7.70
7.76 and paid as high as $7.80 on more
than one Instance.
Killer trade opened slow and sarly bids
wars little if any more than steady, Buy
ers gradually raised their hands, how
ever, and opening aalea wore about 6i
10c higher, while eager competition In
the middle of the session pushed values
up until they were a full dims above last
week's close. One packer laid out all
through ths session, and while most of
the hogs sold at prices that were largely
a dime higher, close was weak, lata sales
looking as much as a nickel lower than
the best time.
Movement was fairly active all the way
through, and while late rounds wers a
little dull a fair clearanos was mads In
good seaaon. Bulk of ths sales was mads
at $7.6t)'UV7.76, with a sprinkling of lights
from $766 down, and tops at $7.80. All
prices ars ths highest of ths year, be
ing In fact ths hlghast sine October,
the high month of last year.

SHEEP Receipts of sheep and lambs
were ot pretty good volume, about forty
six cars, or 11,000 head, arriving. This
Is nearly twice as largs as last week, but
2.000 smaller than two weeks ago, and a
shortage of almost 4,000 as compared with
the same Monday a year ago.
Opening prospects In the lamb division
Indicated a continuance of laat week's
heartshnees. Quality was as s general
thing nothing extra, and packers tame
out with flat quarter lower bids right
from ths start. Sellers failed to see sny
reason for so much of a drop, and up to
a lata hour practically no business had
been transacted, but the outlook was any
thing but promising.
It was nearly noon before much of any.
thtna- had moved. When lambs finally
started scalenard beat kinds looked prettjr

but commoner grades, of which there waa
an abundance, were uneven and In most
cases 10 16c lower.
Muttons were very slow, and up to noon
nothing good had beea sold. A low nlne-ty-slx-pound
yearlings st $8.60 looked
pretty close to steady. Quite a few of
the unfinished lambs were bought for
sheering snd feeding st $8 30010.16.

DEALINGS ON LARGER SCALE
NKW YORK, Jan. 21 Quoted prices
suffered further severe shrinkage today,
the almost steady decline being attended
by liquidation and short selling of a now

vices over the week-end, especially Pres
ident Wilson's addresses. Washington's
tense relations with Berlin snd London
snd sn Ill-balanced technical condition,
provided fresh ammunition for bearish at
tacks Of these Influences, the president's
tersnces formed the chief topic of dis
cussion. According to gossip of the hoard
room, selling pressure from Interior
sources wss more general, the middle
west being active In that direction. Deal
ings were on a larger and more varied
scale than of recent weeks, over a half
million shares changing hands during ths
unsettled forenoon.
I'nlted States Steel was successfully
employed ss a lever to depress other
leading stocks, including the mora stable
railways, coppers and various specialties.

upon United States Steel was renewed.
Another upturn. In specialties, causing
another covering movement In the gwn
eral list, resulted In a moderate rally at
the close.

Cables reported a lowwr market for
Americans In London and that center
contributed nominally to the loeat offer
ings of Ertes, Canadian Pacifies and
