CHICAGO GRAIN AND PROVISIONS
Featares at the Tradlagr Closing:
Prieea aa Board of ale,
CHICAGO. Jan. 84. Big exnort aalea
estimated at mora than l.OOO.dlo bushels,
ths largast amount this season, gave
notable strength today to wheat, notwith
standing: depression at ths start. Prices
closed firm, p to li&l'io higher, with
May, $1.1U4 and July 1.&1. Corn, finished
a shade off to ViQo up; oats, unchanged
to Vic advance, and provisions at exactly
Saturday's latest figures.
Advances In the price of wheat applied
chiefly to the May option, which gained
a full cent on the July delivery, and
closed at the highest quotation yet for the
1916 crop. The fact that a foreign govern
ment was said to have purchased dlreot
the great bulk of tha wheat sold for ex
port had a decidedly stimulating affect,
as Indicating that plans to obtain ade
quate supplies for Europe from countries
other than tha United btates were not
proving a sueoesa.
Early depression In tha wheat market
resulted from talk of Anglo-French gov
ernment assistance having brought about
a cut In vessel rates from Argentina.
Mild weather Instead of predicted severe
cold In the domestic winter crop belt
wss a further reason for weakness.
Corn rallied with wheat. The market,
however, was under selling pressure
throughout tha greater part or the day on
account of large receipts and ths slow
ness of eastern inquiry.
Oats were relatively firm. There was
a brisk call from the seaboard.
Provisions were Inclined to esse ' off
In consequence of heavy receipts of hogs.
The strength of the grain markets,
though, and late advancea at the yards
acted finally as a complete offset.

CATTLE Receipts of rattle, while
slightly smaller than laat week, and tha
smallest of any Monday alnca four weeka
ago, were very liberal, being 2,000 head
larger than a year ago. Other market
points were heavily loaded and tha trade
everywhere reported aa opening slow,
with a weak tendency. As a result, buy
era at this point were slow about getting
out Into ths yards and very backward
about making blda until conditions at ail
points were better understood. Ths early
morning dragged along with little busi
ness being accomplished, and It was well
along toward midday before enough
buainess was dona to really make a
market.
Ths trade continued dull all tha morn
ing, with prices ranging anywhere from
weak to loo lower, tha decline being
mostly on killers, whlls feeders wars
about steady.

A big run and slow market In Chicago
failed to have much effect on tha local

a nickel higher tl.an last week's close. A
number of weighty hogs were bought as

Packers tried to use the liberal receipts
at Chicago aa a club to hold vaiuea down
at this point, and early ofiera were
barely steady. een on best hogs. The
graduslly raised their hands and little
or no trading was oone until bids were
all of a nl -kel higher. Even this advance
tailed to buy a good many hogs, and be

light kinds looked as much as 10c higher.
Toward the wlndup the market looked a
little shaky In a stmt or two, but whIN
late trading was a little slow pri gs were
fairly well sustained all through.
