Four Horses Burn
To Death in a Barn
Four horses were nurned to death In a
barn belonging to L. Pederson, at 2(25
Mason street, early this morning, per
sons living nearby heard an explosion
and saw a man drive away hurriedly in
an automobile.
Police believe ths fire to be of Ine.en
diary origin. Ths horses belonged to
William Lee of ths People's Ice and
Cold Storage company.
Fire Warden Morris declared this after
noon that he had learned the number ot
the automobile seen as It drove hurriedly
away from the scene of the blase. The
number was not of a Nebraska license,
the fire warden said.
Strenth of wheat prices developed most
broadly in ths December option whioh
would be the first to feel a curtailment of
deliveries on contracts. Bullish traders
orofersed to fear that the labor dlsnuta
on the Chicago Belt railroad might soon
be extended to Include other lines center
ing here, and it was rumored In addition
that some northwestern roads were re
fusing domestic shipments of wheat and
flour to the east, not wishing to rink
having cars delayed by ths unprecedented
jam of export freight or by a possible
enlarged tie up pending a settlement o
disputes with railway employes.
Corn advanced to the highest rrlcei
yet this season. Unsettled weather an i
the railway strike, both tending to
diminish receipts, were mainly responsi
ble. Oats rose In sympthy with other
grain.
Prorlslops went upward despite lower
quotations on hogs. The smallness of
contract stocks here appeared to have
mad buyers anxious, especially as there
is no new pork in sight yet to fill the
January eontracta.

Seemed Inclined to wait for advices from
other selling points before doing very
muck tiuslness. The fact that they have
been heavy purchasers of cattle all tha

The trade finally aettled down tn a 1ftA

Hog trade was slow In getting started
again this morning. Big receipts were re
ported at all points snd most other
markets expected a weakness in values.
As was the case yesterday, shippers took
their Cine about starting out. but finally
they, along with ons or two of the pack
ers, began picking up the good heavy
hogs, as well as soms of the best lights,
at prices that were not over 6c lower
and In many cases were nearly steady.
About mldforenoon tbe trade suddenly
took on new life. Bids Jumped to a fully
steady basis and many sales were made
this way, while before the close prloes
paid looked ss much as 6c higher than
yesterday's early market, and were so
different from yesterday's close as to be
clear out of range of comparison. The
windup waa very active and packers
wanted hoaa ma badlv on late rounds that
they met one or two of the laat trains
in trie chutes ana oougnt tne nogs before
uiey were yarded.
