Jncobs. He had apparently been shipped
too soon after the bath which is given
to all white birds Just before going to
the show.
George was so sick he could hardly
emit a crow. He tried his best, but bin
"whistle was rusty." The cold developed
rapidly into roup -In spite of all that
Jacobs' medical skill and experience could
do, and George expired early on Thanks
giving day. Just when so many of nla
baothera were meeting a bloody death In
the trenches before dinner.
"He would probably have taken a first,"
said Jacobs, sadly.

PARIS, Oct. SO. Amereian-blult ships
and American big guns will figure In
the first line of any naval operations
growing out of the Balkan conflict, as
the former American battleships Idaho
and Mississippi, now the Greek battle
ships Kllkla and Lemnos, are the best
warships possessed by any of the Bal
kan atates, while monster fourteen-lnch
um built by the Bethlehem work for
Greece are now doing service at the Dar
danelles. The Balkans have a long stretch of
coast on the Mediterranean and B at k
eas, making naval operations likely on
both of these fronts. All the states have
navies, except Serbia. The Greeks had
ordered a monster super'dreadnought, of
23,000 tons, but this Is cancelled. They
also had the fcalamie, 19,60) tons, build
ing In Vulcan yarda of Germany, which
the Germans quickly approplated. This
leaves them with the former Idaho and
Mississippi in the first line, the Avenuff
of 10,000 tons, three 5,0K-ton crulsirs,
twelve gunboats, and a fair-sized fiotila
of destroyers an I torpedo boats. Including
two aubmartnes. One of the beft Greek
submarines was being built in Fran ,
and was taken over by I ran e only two
weeks ago because Greece was behind
on payments.
Bulgaria has a Mediterranean and

to reports received there from Vienna,
the allies are preparing to remain at
Balonlki for an Indefinite period, as they
are landing machinery for an electric
power station, betides awarding contracts

properties in Iondon have decreased dur
ing the last year. Kven In cases where
property Is being rented under long-trrm
leases, the landlords have frequently
recognited the iiosition In which the war
may have placed their tenants by giving
appreciable rebates on the contract fig
ures. In the Stock exchango district
n per cent has been knocked off the pre
war rental tn many cases rather than
lose a desirable tenant.
Office and loft-bullding property Is
naturally very difficult to rent at the
present time. Many professional and
business men whose leases have expired
during the last twelve months have taken
advantage of this condition to secure now
quarters at far lower rentals or else re
tain their old quarters on more or less
nominal terms.
Real estate men state that the big re
ductions In rental values have provcu
a serious matter to. many landlords and
property-holding companies whose in
come Is dependent upon the renting of
high priced offices. The higher range of
Interest values at the present time, which
moreover is practically certain to last
for many years after the war, also tends
to lower the return on rented property
of all kinds, as there Is no likelihood of
renewsl of mortgages at the old rate of
4 or 41! per cent.

IN BELGRADE ASSURED
LONDON, Nov. 26. The safety of both
the British and the French naval bri
gades, which recently were In Belgrade Is
now assured. The French section arrived
at Monastlr, near the Greek border, a
few days ago and a telegram has been
received from Admiral Trowbridge, com
manding the British brigade, dated from
Mitrovltsa, November 20, stating that all
