The receipts of all grains were very
good today, wheat leading with a total
of 176 cars.
The demand for wheat was quite active,
and the market sold from unchanged to
Vc higher.
Corn was also In good demand and
was quoted unchanged to a Ho lower.
Yellow corn was quoted at a premium of
IH" above the other varieties.
The osts market was a trine Irregular,
the No. 2 white selling about He higher
while standard oats sold a lower.
The run of rye was quite heavy again
today and this cereal sold unchanged to
Ho higher.
The receipts of barley were unimpor
tant and the market was quoted nom
inally uncnanged.
Liverpool close: Wheat, unchanged to
Id lower; oorn, unchanged to He higher.

exporters at Winnipeg and Duluth gave
the wheat market here a decided upward
swing today after an early decline. Prices
closed firm. HW'' to le net higher, with
December at $l.024rl 02H and May at
tl.04'4. Corn gained H-nc to lo and oats
HKHc to Uc Provisions finished Irreg
ular, varying from lOo off to a rise of
32Hc.
Wheat bulls took command after the
fact becsme apparent that exporters In
the northwest who had lake vessels char
tered were finding that despite the im
mense crop movement from first hands
the car arrivals at the big terminals were
proving too small for Immediate require
ments. Besides, late advices from the
northwest appeared to Indicate that re
ceipts would soon tend to diminish as
farmers In that section were busy with
fall work In the fields. Moreover, the
Increase of the domestic visible supply
total turned out to be less than ex
pected. Excellent weather and the large re
ceipts northwest operated at first to give
the advantage to the bears. Then, too,
cable quotations were easy and optimistic
reports were at hand as to the condition
pf the winter crop In the southwest.
When once the market, however, took the
upgrade, no Important reaction oocurrf-d.
Corn developed firmness almost from
the start. Export transactions formed the
onier strengthening inriuenoe.
Oats responded to persistent buying, said
to come from the seaboard. Notice was
taken, too, of sharply higher prices that
prevailed In Canada.
Higher quotations on hogs and grain
put strength Into provisions. Selling after
the bulge, though, made the close of the
market unsettled,

Ing. Unfortunately, the quality of the
cattle averaged very poor. There was a
big oversupply of common, trashy kinds,
a good many on the Texas and Mexican
order. This naturally made the trade
slow, as most buyers seemed to be look
ing for something desirable,
Good to choice beef steers were sought
after, and the feeling was steady on
anything of that description. The less
desirable kinds, by reason of their abund
ance were slow, buyers oelng backward
about taking hold of that kind, and the
morning was well advanced before many
of them had changed hands. The general
market on the less desirable kinds might
be summed up as slow, weak to lower.
Cows and heifers were generally about
steady, as the supply of cattle of that
description was by no means large. Com
mon to medium Kinds of steers coming
Into direct competition with cow stuff,
naturally tend to weaken the market a
little.
Oood to choice feeders were scarce and
sought after at prloes right around steady
with last week's close. On the other
hand, the great mass of common, trashy
kinds were slow and hard to move at
prices generally a little lower.

HOUS Supply figures were the largest
for a Monday since the middle of Septm
ber, about ftfty-flve cars, or 8,600 head,
being reported In. This Is 700 heavier
than last week, slightly larger than two
weeka ago and heavier than the aaine
Monday last year by nearly 400 head.
The market opened very dull. Pacers
wore not doing anything early, and most
shippers wers out of the game on early
rounds. Three or four loads were bought
by an outsider at fully steady prices, but
that about llnlahed their early operations.
Later-on after packers had established a
trading basis shippers picked up a few
loads that were around 16c lower. One
load sold early as high as 87.86, ths dsy's
top, and one or two bunches landed at
17.80. First packer bids were fully 20o
lower than last week's close, the only ap
parent reason for their bearlshness being
that closing prtces Saturday were way
out of line with other points. Sellers re
fused to make so largo a oonoeaslon with
out trying the marks t out. and nothing
was dons until nearly the middle of the
forenoon, but In the end they were forced
to accept figures that were about 1620o
below Saturday. It did not take long to
effect a pretty fair clearance once a start
was made, and most of ths offerings had
been cashed before a10.

the session, Canadian Pacific being the
chief feature with a maximum gain of 11

$7,000,000 IN SEPTEMBER
PHILADELPHIA. Nor. l.-The net
earnings of the Pennsylvania railroad
lines, east of Pittsburgh for the month,
of September amounting to $7,282,021,
were the largest for any one month In
the history of the company, while the
gross earnings of $30,817,261 have been
exceeded only twloe.
For the months of August and October,
181$, ths groes earnings were slightly
larger. The net earnings for September
exceeded those for the same month last
year by nearly $1,500,000.
