Few Omahans know there ts such
an organisation here m ttie "National
Sales Managers' association." This
orgnlcatlon Is composed of well
known members of Omaha's manu
facturing and jobbing houses and
they have been quietly pursuing the
even tenor of their way for several
years, without making any display or
seeking publicity. The motto of the
association Is "Accomplishment," and
they have followed this motto dili
gently and consistently.
It hu been the purpose of the organl
tatlon to effect the betterment of con
flltlons for employer and wider and
mora comprehensive Rraup of business
principles In general with special atten
tion to local problems.
The association mwlince each month,
with a dinner preceding dlsrusslnn of
the subject In hand. Subject for the
year are aaelKned at the first meeting
and each speaker Is expected to know
Just what ha Is talking about The dis
cussions are practical and hard-headed.

president and Charles Ashton was first
secretary. Robert Trimble was delegate
this year to the convention at 8an Fran

Harry Murphy secretary at thla time.
Among some of the problems that have
been worked out and adopted quite gen
erally have been efficiency clubs, recre
ation periods for employes, uniformity
In vacations for employes and a more
clean division and more complete co
operation between sales departments,
credit departments and advertising de
partments. The organisation has furnished speak
ers for the claaa In salesmanship at the
Toung Men's Christian association night
school and for other business organisa
tions. The Omaha division of the National
Bales Managers' association keeps In close
touch with trade conditions. If there la
a likelihood of the shortage of the prune
crop this Information la secured at once.
All members of the organization are
boosters and all are constantly striving
to contribute something toward the gen
eral good of the city.

COMING TO OMAHA SOON
Herbert I Houston, vice president of
the Ioubleday-Page company, publishing
the World's Work, president of the As
sociated Ad Clubs of the World and
chairman of the League for the Enforce
ment of Peace, la to be In Omaha to
peak before the Commercial club at a
publlo affairs luncheon In about two
weeka. The Omaha Ad club has beeq In
vited to attend this meeting jointly with

The body of M. C. Jones, well-known
traveling salesman and former Omsha
f loneer, who died Frio's y morning at hh

states consular service under the new
civil service system applying to thla
branch of the public work. He has been
advised of his successful examination and
expects to receive Instructions within a
week or two, directing him to appear be

WORKINGMEN THROUGH WITH
THE ULIUS ORKINS STORE
Saturday saw the completion of the
building operations which have been go
ing on for aome time at the Julius Orkln
store. Final finishing touches have not
yet been completed, but those who vIMted
the store Saturday were unhindered by
painters or builders and so were free to
enjoy an Inspection of the enlarged es
tablishment. The store now la practically
doubled, occupying three floors and the
basement at lKOs-1510 Doublss.
Though It Is the same establishment
originally conducted by O. K. Pcofleld It
would not be recognized as s M now
since Mr. Orkln has completely remodeled
the premises. He hss Instilled au entirely
new and up-to-date entrance with display
windows across the forty-four foot front
age with twenty foot depth. Other ar
rangements throughout the store are of
equal eleganoe and though many favor
able comments have been made they are
surely few !n comparison to what Mr.
Orkln will receive upon the formal open
ing which Is to be announced later.

Building for September and Nine Months
The Beptember reports of building per
mltg issued throughout the country make
another rood showing. The first gain,
as compared with a year previous, oc
curred la August, when the Increase over
August. 1814, was 14 per cent Beptem
ber scores a more decided Improvement,
one of a per cent. The building permits
of sixty-five cities for Beptember as of
ficially reported to the American Con
tractor, Chicago, total W.66.0S2, as com
pared with 41,W0.2t4 for September. 1914.
Primarily the favorable showing s due
to the sudden tightening of the money
market, which occurred during the first
few months of the European war. Com
paring present conditlona with those of
a few months ago. In addition to a much
easier money market, thers la now ob
servable an expansion of general busi
ness and s greater disposition to embark
la construction work, also a hardening
of prices in many lines of building ma
terial, which Is hastening a number of
delated projects.
Of the slxt five cities tabulated be
low forty-six, t.r more than two-thirds,
make gains over thfi corresponding period
of last year, and many of the gslns are
very large. Dayton Increases Its per
cent: Oklahoma. 361; Washington,
74; Troy. 268; Bpokane. K6; BX. Jo
seph, 178; Atlanta. Z81; Indianapolis. toG;
New Haven, 142; Bridgeport, 1; Louis
ville, 115; Milwaukee, 146; Newark, 186;
Philadelphia, 16J; Bloux City, 104; and
Worcester, 1&S.
The two last monthly statements have
greatly Improved the record for the year
to date. The total permits Issued In
these cities for the first nine months of
ths year amount to ttfa.464.7M, aa com
pared with Hl,0O,021 for the correspond
ing period of 1914, a loss of only I per
