Steel's advance occurred In the face of persle'ent opposition from the professional element, which sold the stock on the theory that Its rise wss being ued as a cloak for selling of other reprveentstlve Issues. New records were made by Bethlehem Steel, which roso 7 to 600 Sttidebaker, 3 to 170; American Steel Foundries. 44 to 74; Willys-Overland, 2 to 2C9; Vlr- (Inla Iron, Coal and Coke, I to 70, and lilted Htatea Industrial Alcohol, 6V4 to 113. Gains of J to I points were registered In the early part of the session by Gen eral Motors, American Locomotive, Bald win Locomotive, Crucible Steel. New York Airbrake. Hock Island s decline was followed by general recessions In the railway grouo. many of which showed net losses at the close. Specialties also yielded In large part. Total sales amounted to l.OiO.wO shares. Foreign selling of stocks was again In evidence, offering consisting largely of transcontinental, Erics, Reading and some of the copper. Some dissatisfac tion was expressed at the continued heaviness of exchange on Ixmdon despite the arrival of another large amount of Hrltlsh gold via Halifax. Kates on Italy were a trifle higher, but Austrian re mittances were at last week's low quota tions. The latest statement of the Im perial bank of Germany, showed a gain of not quite $l,000,0oo In gold and a con traction of more than $",vo0,000 In note circulations. Increased foreign offerings of our bonds made only slight Impression 011 prices. Total sales, par value, aggregated $i, 8W.O1A I'nlted States bonds were unchanged on cell.
