been torn up for tho purpo of maklni

water, wrl, paring, etc, which
nerenttatea the cJoelns of Thirtieth
treet, that belna; practically the only
avenue leading- north out of tha city, and
tho weather being of such a nature that
the dirt roadn were almont Impaenahle.
There waa only one other route, and that
as by the way of Twenty-fourth afreet
to Read etreet and on Read street to
Twenty-fifth street, north of tha city
limit. Conveyance or art kinda were
dally bring atuck In tha mud in tha low
spot betaren the two cities. I contin
ually had call for relief from thta
troubla from parties all over the city ol
Omaha, Florence and surrounding coun
try. It m not a matter that belonged
to tha city In any way. shapa or form,
and It seemed thst nobody wanted to
take tha reiponllHlty, and a there are
a number of funeral passing; over this
road every day I took the. matter up to
e If there were not ome mean by
which this trou'ile could be overcome.
I went to Florence a"d got Mayor
Tucker to do a coi'r'e of day" work on
thin road; got Mr. Howell to lend u the
engine to roll the water and mud down o
a to get a permanent foundation, whip.,
took two day. We took eome of the
city forces and did a couple of day' work
and some enterprising; rltlsena contributed
money toward helping buv drain pipe
and other work and paid for some work
which Mr. Tucker couldn't do, owing to
the fact that he bad no monev to do It
with. We collected somewhere In tha
neighborhood of fiov. I went to the
coi.nty conimlFloner and saked them to
jut two bridge on Spring street In Flor
ence, which thev klndiy consented to do
and which are now completed. The road
l now open from 3fth stree', on Hprlr-g
street, clear through to Twenty-flftu
ttreet, and a'so the lower road, which
leaves two avenue of travel now open
to the public, and both thoroughfare are
In gone passable condition all the time.
I want to take thi opportunity of
thanking; averybody for their co-operation
In bringing this road to a passable condi
tion, for time, money and other alstance
whhh waa contrihiited, to fix this piece
of road. whl. h was tha worst, 1 think,
that I ever saw to be called a thorough
fare leading out of a metropolitan city.
