Pioneer Woman Who
Had Thrilling Times
With the Redskins
Carrie Lowe of the Edward Lynch

unusually happy state of mind Just now.
Her Aunt Kate li her from Syracueo,
Neb. The name of the relative is in
orlbed on the register at the Welllngtoa
eg "Mrs. Kate Hedges." but Miss Lowe
osJla her "Aunt Kate." v
Mrs. Hedges has resided oa the gam
It at Syracuse since 1861, when she and
husband, Rochester Hedges, arrived by
steamer from Cincinnati. Mr. Hedges
wag state representative In 1864-U6B.
Mrs. Hedges is recounting for the par.
tlcnlar benefit of Mlaa Lowe experiences
with the Indiana fifty years ago. On one
occasion she compelled three Indian to
disarm before they entered her home.
These redskins were begging; food and
clothe and presented a formldabl ap
pearance at th Hedge' kitchen . door,
with guns and bow and arrows and
knives.
Th worst scare "Aunt Kate" ever had
with an Indian was when a brave started
to follow her upstair by way of th olU-
faahloned ladder used In the pioneer
home. Bhe scared the Indian by throw
ing a rolling pin at him.
Watchman Keeps Eye
On School Children
A Missouri Paclflo watchman Is now
stationed at the Martha street crossing
of th Belt Line, largely as a result of
th agitation arising on th subject at
th uansoom Park Improvement club
meetings.
Borne week ago th club started an agi
tation for a viaduct at that point and
another at th point where th sunken
boulevard crosses Paclflo street Another
meeting Is to be held Friday evening of
thl week, when these questions of the
viaducts are to be further discussed.
The Martha street crossing of the Belt
Line was considered especially danger
ous to children that bad to cross there
to get to Windsor school. Freight train
witching nd moving about frequently
have occasion to stop at that point thus
blocking th path and th crossing.
School children tn a hurry to get to th
Windsor school In th morning long have
been in the habit of climbing under the
care to get to school. It was thla prac
tice that alarmed the people of the dis
trict and led to th demand tor a viaduct
and for a watchman at that point
