Opp-rslve Heat Cheeks Activities
la Many Directions.
NEW TORK, Sept. 17.-Dun'g Review
tomorrow will say:
Oppressive heat checked trade activities
in numerous directions, but thla Is a tem
porary drawback and Is mora than off-
aet by the benefit accruing to the ma
turing crops. Agricultural success Is ob
viously the most Important factor In the
future outlook and harvest prospects are
made atill brighter by the prevalence of
high temperatures over a wide area of
the country. losses In mercantile lines
as a result of the hot weather, which re
tarded retail distribution, csn be later re
gained, and there Is no abatement of
confidence tn sustained progress during
ine isii anu winter seasons.
For the present cross currents appear
In commercial channels, with the diplo
matic complications continuing to cause
hesitancy In forward undertakings. Hence
there Is less of the anticipatory buying
that ususlly follows the assurance of
bountiful harvest, but ceneral trade has
made a substantial recovery from previ
ous depression ana tne runaamentai sit
uation Is so sound that a permanent
check to the advance Is unlikely. In
spite of sll restraints, various branches
of business still make headway and the
dry goods markets have become promi
nent in thla respect. The Iron ami steel
trade Is benefiting by the augmented de
mands from the railroads.
Construction work is also Increasing.

The quarter reduction asked by buyers
meant that sellers would have to takf off
at one slash nearly all they have suc

two weeks. This wasn't a very pleasing
prospect from any angle and while there
was little chance of doing much better,
the selling Interests decided to take their

Although sailers held on for the best

thought they had a license to try to re
cover at least a part of yesterday's de
cline and as' a result hardly any fat.
lambs had been sold up to a rather lata
hour In the forenoon
Feeders, on the other hand, gtsrted
moving In good season at good steady
prices, and the bulk of them hsd been
cleaned up by a fairly early hour. As was
the esse yesterday, a rood many of the
desirable lilnds of feeding lambs went at
99.1919.25. with, of course, a slight sprink
ling of the commoner kinds at $9.00 and
under. A few feeding wea were reported.

The limit set by th packers stuck sgalr
toiVev. and In the end the bulk of the fat
lambs a lain went across the scales at
$9 25. This Is on paper just steady, but
packers claimed that quality was nsrdly
ui to yesterdsy's standard, and they
quoted prices sllrhtly higher on that ac
count. Fat sheep proved acarca again
today, and continued selling In about the
same notches. Best awea her again
