iEaca year brings aa added Increase In the Omaha circle in
Lincoln, and while many of the school net prefer the eastern
. schools, the number of Nebraska devotees Is Urge and enthusiastic
this year.
This is "rush week" in Lncola, so a few have gone down early to
enjor the excitement of the gayetlea incident to "rush week," and the
gayetles are many and varied, and only fully appreciated by those who
have hit this trail In the pledge of sorority and fraternity life.
Among those lately registered for the university are: Misses Char
lotte Bed well, Clara Llndley, Margaret McCoy, Katherlne Newbranch,
Marie Hlxenbaugh, and the Messrs. Jack Austin, Charles Huestls, Philip

AS U. S. DEPUTY MARSHAL
T. W. Carroll, formerly of Orleans and
Alma, has been appointed deputy United
States marshal with headquarters at
Lincoln. Mr. Carroll was appointed by
United States Marshal Flynn, and was
sworn in at the Federal building. He
will take p .his work aa soon as the
preliminary arrangements ' have been
made, whloh will be In a few days.

DEPARTMENT COMES TOO LATE
For a number of years, Mrs, Nellie
Bomar, a widow, has lived on the
second story of a frame building on
the southwest corner of Sixteenth
and Leavenworth streets, making a
llvlthood by taking In sewing and
conducting a rooming house for men
only.
Mrs. Bomar had been Investing her
small profits In some furniture, mak
ing the purchases one at a time as
she made a little money. She stored
the furnture In two of the spare
rooms of her rooming house.
It was her ambition to save envmgh
money to rent a little cottage some place
and spend the rest of her life In peace.
But Friday morning about 4 o'clock Ed
Fowler, one of the roomers stopping with
Mrs. Bomar, detected the odor of smoke
and upon making an Investigation feu. id
a small blace In one of the rooms In
which Mrs. Bomar had stored her furniture.
He called Mrs. Bomar, who locked the
doors of the rooms In an effort to confine
the blase to the one room while she called
the fire department.
When the department answered the
alarm and arrived on the scene, however,
the blate had spread and the efforts of
the fire laddies to save the property were
futile. Mra. Bomar not only lost her
precious furniture, but all her belongings.
KM Fowler, with the assistance of his
son,' John, and Richard Quintan, another
roomer, managed to save their personal
effects, but everything else was lost.

All records for sttendance at national
conventions of the Letter Carriers' as
sociation were broken at the recent gath
ering here, according to official figures
Just given out. Prior to the Omaha con
vention, Rochester. N. T.. had held the
record for attendance, but OmahA, the
convention city, proved to have an even
bluger crowd, beating Rochester by about
fifty delegates. The accredited delegates
numbered 1,17 here, with twenty-three
national officers, seventeen state presi
dents, twenty-five delegates - at - large,
ninety-four women delegates, fifty-one
women visitors and four brass bands.

RUN OF GRASS FED CATTLE
TO RIVER MARKETS BEGINS
The run of grass-fed cattle to the mar
kets has started and Is well under way,
coming two weeks earlier than usual, ow
ing to the excellent condition of the west
ern range. At this time from the west
ern Nebraska and Wyoming range the
Northwestern Is carrying an average
of 200 cars of cattle per day, a large
portion of them coming to the Omaha
market
