to the sport than any other man. To

famous as a pitcher, one of the first to

With his parents he moved from Bryon,
m.. his birthplace, to Rockford in 113,
where he attended a commercial college.
But ha soon learned he could make money
playing ball and joined the Forest City
dub ef Rockford, which mad a repu
tation for Itself when It defeated the
National etub ef Washington in U01.
Four years later Mr. Spalding joined
the famous Boston Bad Stockings, and
pitched the olub to pennant victories in
ths races of the National Professional
association In U7S-7S-74-TC. Ills longest

In UTS Mr. Spalding became Interested
in the manufacture of sporting goods
and started a small shop in New Haven,
Conn., with a capital of only 1100. The
business grew and formed the nucleus
around which the present house of A.

postoffloe yesterday, and congregating
in the comer nearest Postmaster Whar
ton's sanctum sanctorum proceeded to
serenade him, without having first dis
covered that he was not present Un
doubtedly they were desirous of hearing
a talk from JLt. Wharton In return for
their mlaucal efforts, but no talk was
forthcoming, and a disconsolate bunch of
musicians trailed from the building after
they had discovered that they had wasted
their good muslo on the underlings of the
postofflc.

ARRIVES HERE TONIGHT
Mrs. Patrick Campbell and her tndon
company arrived in Omaha last evening
at 7 o'clock over the Union Pacific, com
ing from Salt Lake City. Mrs. Campbell
will be seen in "Pygmalion" this
evening, and at the Saturday matinee
"The Second Mrs. Tanqueray" will bold
the boards, with Mrs. - Campbell in her
roost appealing role of Paula Tanqueray.
