Rertew of Operations on Stock Et.
rhssss Darlag the Day.
YORK. Aug. 1.-Wal street re
ceived an unexpected reminder today that
a state of war exists across the water.
The market, which had been under
pressure In the early hours, broke ab
ruptly In the afternoon on new that a
German submarine had aunk another
British liner.
United States Pteel, weakest of the lot
up to midday, fell over t points and other
stock of almost equal prominence showed
losses of 1 to I. while a few of the re
cently exploited poclaltle added 2 to 6
point to their reversea of the forenoon.
From thla level most stocks made partial
recovery, only to fall to lower levels In
the final hour when the selling movement
gathered greater force. The closing was
heavy to weak, with only slight recovery
from minimum quotations.
Uven before word f Germany' latest
marine exploit became generally known,
there waa an absence of the recent
bouyant and open manipulation In the so
called war stocks. In fact. Bethlehem
Fteel common and preferred were con
spicuously weak, alao Westtnghouse Elec
tric, Pressed Hteel Car, General Ivleotrla
and the principal motor Issues, losses In
thla group ranging from S to 10 point.
New york Airbrake waa the only note
worthy exception, at one time ahowlng a
gain of 11 points, part of which waa lost
later. In the main railway showed under
lying strength, holding to within a point
or thereabout witn tne - excoptea or
Reading and Canadian Pacific, which
recorded wider fluctuations. The day'
total transactions of 1.145,000 shares ex
ceeded any session of recent months.
For the first time this week, torulgn ex
change played little or no part a a mar
ket factor. Demand sterling was a shadn
harded than yesterday' best and francs
made- further material recovery from
their reoent weakness. Bankers continued
their "credit conference," but the plan
to establish new British and French loans
In this market remained in abevanc.
The Bank of England, Increased its
gold holding for the week by almost
$7,000,000 while the Bank of France gained
almost twice that amount of the precious
metal.
The local bond market continued to re
cede moderately on more "future" or for
eign selling. Total sales, par value, were
12. 736000.
United States bond were unchanged on
call.

CHICAOO; Aug. 19. News of the sink
ing of the Arabia caused fresh weakness
In the wheat market today alter prices
had begun to recover from a setback due i
to excellent reports from the harvest In
the spring crop belt W ith September at
l.tfH and December at I1.04H, quotations
closed unsettled, So to Uo under laat
night. Corn finished unchange to S,(H-o
higher, oata hiba off to S.o up, and pro
visions with gain of 2'v&k3 to Joe.
Bears In wheat had the advantage from
the start. A a result, for the first time
this season, the May option went lower
than last year, selling down to 31.08. Fa
vorable weather throughout Minnesota,
the Dakota and the Canadian northwest
continued on the previous day to ant as
more than an offset fo rain In the terri
tory Southwest of her.. A a matter of
fact, today advice pointed to a realisa
tion of one-of the largest spring wheat
crop ever grown In America, If not the
very largest On th ensuing decline In
dications that a fair export business had
developed led to a little reaction, but the
bulla were making only alow headway
when word came that the Arabia was the
victim of a submarine. -
Increased selling that 'followed the
recelpta of bulletin telling of the fate
of the Arabic depressed tlia wheat mar
ket visibly, but the extent of tha fall In
values was not to exceed He on the
bushel. This loss wa virtually wled
out before trading reached an end for
the day, although trace of nervousness
were still evident when the final gong
cleared tha fit
Corn at first sagged with wheat. Ixter,
though, the market hardened. nwln to

Biraiile beeves were decidedly acsree. Ite
oelpt so far this week have been nearly
f.uuu heavier than last week and unusually
liberal for this Urn of th year. Partly
for thla reason and partly owing to the
liberal receipt and bad markets eaat, the
trade has tieen very unssuiad and trend
of values lower, l.'ornfed cattle hav felt
th competition from western ranger and
while price today wer not a great rlesl
luwor than yesterday, the general market
shows a lotyluo decline for th wnt,
Western beeves, on the other hand, hav
been In good demand and very nearly
steady right along, tills being particularly
true of the fair to good grade. Movement
wa very sluggish today ud th under
tone to th trau rather weak than otnor-
Wl.to.
There waa very littlo activity In stock
ets and feeders, although prices ruled
about steady at the resent decline. Good
fleshy and medium weight feeders aro
selling boo lower than at the ?sl time
two or three week ago, and aiow sale
at that. Stock cattle ha not shown so
much decline and ar In very good de
mand right along. Inquiry for stock cows
and hellers hss held up well and prices
have remained a bo it steady and the sain
hold tru as to stock calves. i
