CHICAGO, Aug. 12. Wheat- developed
much strength at times today. Influenced
largely by reports that millers and for
eigners were active buyers at Kansas
iCIty. With September at $l.lljl ll'4 and
lUecember $1.08(4. the market closed un
settled, Ho off to lMic up, compared with
last night. Corn finished He to Ho net
lower, oats at Mo off to a shade advance,
and provisions varying from 22V&C decline
to a rise of 86c.
It was said also that the mills at Min
neapolis were showing activity in the
purchase of September options on wheat.
The immediate Incentive was unsettled
weather which prevailed today over a
large portion of the wheat belt and which
threatened to Increase further the serious
damage and delay already Inflicted on
much of the winter crop.
Bearish reactions In wheat took place
shortly after the opening and just before
the close. The earlier setback, which
was the more forcible of the two, seemed
to be owing in a measure to flattering
reports from the harvest In the north
west. The later downturn resulted mostly
from profit taking by holders.
Com held within a narrow range. Crop
reports were a little more favorable. Wet
weather lifted the oats market. Later,
however, prices eased off as a result of
Increased notices of consignments, from
first hand.
Packers selling ribs pulled down the
value) of provisions. A rally In the pork
market, though, took place afterward on
account of covering by a leading short.
The demand for shipment of provisions
was only moderate on domestlo account
but fair for export,

CATTLE Receipts this morning wer
very fair for a Thursday, 6 fresh cars
being reported In. For the week receipts
amounted lo W.Kxi head, being the largest
for any recent week and larger than a
year ago hy over 4.OU0 head.
The market on beef steers was a little
slow and dull this morning, for the rea
son that Packers already had a good
many rattle on hand and were not In
need of any great additional number, the
result being a alow and weak trade from
start to finish.
Prices on beef cattle are around 10Q00O
lower than last week.
There wer only a few rows and heifers
In sight and they commanded about
steady prices. The market on butcher
atock ia not very different than what It
was a week ago at this time.
The hettergradea of feeders war lower
and slow at that. It took very choice
weighty feed ara to bring $4.15. Light feed
era, on he other hand, were In good de
mand and they sold quit freely at good
firm prices.
