MAYOR DRIVES FAST TROTTER
Half a dozen prominent citizens of
Omaha driving mules hitched to carta
belonging to race horses, was a sight
witnessed at the Speedway dirt track In
Kaat Omaha Friday afternoon.
The prominent citizens were not posing
for the movies. They were practicing for J
the first annual "transmulean" of the
Omaha Driving club, to be held Thursday
afternoon as a part of the race program.
Each of the six had a trial at driving
Locust Jack, a white Jackrabbit, or Lou
DlUon. a dark colored quadruped. The
red-hot tip for the "Transmulean" la that
Everett Buckingham leads the other
drivers In getting speed out of his mule.

This Is tho lnct occasion on which

from tho ntandpoint of anticipation In
tho Sunday Issue of this newspaper.
Next Sunday the story will be a hit

Whether that story will tell of success

I'ho hariKKH lacs, beyond question have
aiiKbt the IntiTcst of the publio In
Omaha, ami It only remains for the
horsemen to provide contests which will
make tliouc w ho see them want to coma
back for mure.
This requirement can be fulfilled by
the official of the Orivlns; club In only
one way by keeping things moving all
the lime and by providing a snappy
Pronram, which will be over tn time for
the spectators to get home to an early
evening meal. Horsemen should assist
in ea riving out this ebjoct for, after all,
it Is the Kpe, lators for whom the whole

Ilrnoks No Delay.
Secretary S'.i.ilth Is an enthusiast on this
very subject. No delays will go with,
him, and starting Judge McCreary Is in
entire sympathy with his dealre for a
meeting wheie "there will be something1
doing all the time."
"No prolonged scoring, no long delays
for rhaiiKlng sulkies or harness, or set
ting shcos or for any other cause will
be allowed," said Mr. Smith. "There
will bo a blacksmith at the track who
will put back a dropped shoe In quick
time. If a horse breaks his sulky, there
will be another sulky ready at the track.
Three or four scores are enough If the
drivers understand the policy of the as
sociation and know that It will be en
forced Impartially In every case."
In order that less time may be con
sumed In handling the horses between
heats, the Iirlvlng club Is building a
paddock near the track.
Difference of Opinion Makes Races,
It la already apparent that the horse
men snd some of the town guys are
going to wager a few bones on the re
sults in some ot tne races. There Is a
large difference of opinion concerning the
merits of some of the horses, whlcb,
will rare here, Just as there was con
cerning the wrestling ability of Stecher
and Cutler.
Many would prefer Nebraska had a
parl-mutucl law legalising use of the ma
chines 2 Such as other states, where the
horse Is popular, have passed. A request
for such a law probably will be made of
the next leg.slature. The machines, do
away with all the evils of the old kinds
of betting and provide amusement for
"the tired buslneHsman," who desires to
wager a few Jitneys on his choice of
the ponies and for tha "plunger." Uotb.
get a square deal and both are satisfied.
fcciiiaiy Nm.tlt, however, is resolve!
that "touts" are to be barred from hand
ing out tips (for a consideration) to
Omaha race goers. So take this straight
tip thut If any "wlae guy" wants to hand
you a line of dope that such and such,
a horse Is sure to win, you can have
him arrested by Just letting Bmlth know
about his actlvlt.es. On race days you
i can read In The Bee all the dope avaiU
