Perjury Charge
DENVER, Colo., July 2. W. W. How
land, expelled member of the Colorado
houo of representative, was acquitted
by a directed verdict today In his trial
on a chargo of perjury. Judge John Perry
in the district court upheld the contention
of Ifowland' attorneys thst the alleged
false statements of the defendant before
a grand Jury did not constitute perjury
under the Colorado statutes.
The Howl and trial was a sequol to the
"package of money" Incident" which at
tracted wide attention during the legla
latlve session of last winter. On February
9 a package of .currency was handed to

lator was seated at his desk in the house

Howland told conflicting stories before
a legislative Investigating committee and
