Bcdy of James E. Davis is Found
Hangins; from Rope in Barn
Mystery Leads to Deed.
MIGHT HAVE BEEN .DRUGGED
The body of James E, Davis, a god
38 years, was found Tuesday morning
banging by the neck from a rope
which had been attached to an iron
staple, tn the loft of the barn to the
rear of the family residence at 4702
NOrth Thirty-Plxth street. Dwlght
Davis, aged 11 years, dincovered the
body when he was sent to call his
father to breakfast.
Davis has been employed in the
auditor of disbursements department
of the Union Pacific for the Inst two
years, and previous to that time
worked for the Burlington railroad
in this city. Hts business and domes
tic affairs, according; to his family,
friends and associates, were abso
lutely normal. No reason has been
ascertained why he should take Ms
life.
He was an active member of the Wood
men of the World and had served as
banker for Druid camp No. 24 for aome
time. The duties of this office had kept
blm at work late Into the night recently
and when be came home Tuesday morn
ing about X o'clock Mrs. Davis thought
nothing unusual of hl late appearance
until he told her that he had not been
working. Upon questioning him he replied
that be atopped In a saloon early In the
evening and had one glaae of beer. After
that he 'remembered nothing till he awoke
about 1 o'clock In a room at the Drexel
hotel.

eighth street, niece" of Mrs. Davis, who
had been spending the night with her
aunt, because of the tatter's illness, stated
that ahe heard her uncle get up shortly
before breakfast time and later go to
the basement and out the cellar entry
way. She gave little heed to the Incident,
thinking he had gone to feed the chick
ens. .
When breakfast had bean served Dwlght
waa sent to the barn and found his
father hanging through the trap door
leading to the loft. He ran screaming from
the place and Captain Kline of the Salva
tion Army, who lives In the neighborhood,
was summoned and cut the man down.
Although the body was still warm, life
was extinct.
Dr. Charles Shook from police head
quartera was summoned and. brought the
prlmotor, but asserted that strangulation
had already made .. hla Services of no
avail. Coroner Crosby, who la a close
personal friend of the dead man, asserts
that Davla Is the last person on earth he
would consider as liable to commit sui
cide. Davis Is survived by his wife, Who
Is completely prostrated and under tbe
care of a physician, and two sons, Dwlght
and Maynard, aged 8 years. Hts mother,
Mrs, Annie Davis, resides at 4129 Grand
avenue, and a sister, Mrs. Rachacl An'
dot son. at Thirty-sixth and Clrand avenue.

Davis having stopped there. He had not
been robbed during the evening, as prwe
tlially the same amount of money that
he had on hla peraon when he left home
