CHICAGO. May 1. Soaking rains that
promised to do much to atop damage
from Hessian fly west and south and to
carry the 1916 crop asfely through the
harvest resulted today In lower prices
for wheat. The market cloaed weak at
lVfc to 2Vc net decline. Corn showed a
loss of Vic to 4B7to net, and oats Htf'ic
to He. In provisions the outcome varied
from ZHc decline to a rise of 4o.
Except for an early upturn, due to
covering by shorts, the wheat market
displayed bearlshness throughout the
day. When the temporary support from
shorts gajve out, stop-loss orders to sell
were soon encountered, and It waa aald
that some of the unloading; was for Kk
ropean account. Aside from the domestic
crop outlook, Liverpool quotations wer
lower, wtth chances apparently increas
ing that Italy would enter the war, per
liaps tomorrow. Meanwhile, there was
continued .uncertainty as to the. charac
ter of Germany's answer to the United
Stales.
Disappointment because of the small
ness of export rlearsnces cut a figure In
preventing any material rally by wheat
bulls late In the session. On the other
hand, primary receipts were large, and
reserves In some sections, especially In
the southwest, were asserted to be prov
ing larger than had been looked for.
Corn prices suffered from the heari
ness of wheat and aa a reault of talk
that a heavy movement a corn from the
country might le expected now that
planting Is largely out of the way. There
seemed to be no leadership on the bull
side. Oata held up better than other
cereals. The reason was a revival of
export call at the seaboard.
Packers' buying rallied provisions. At
times the market had been Inclined to
sag, owing to the downward tendency
or erHln and hogs.

CATTLID The receipts of cattle were
tolerably liberal again thlc morning and
the three dnys' supply figures up about
16,600 head, or iiearlv 4,000 more than for
the flrat halt of laat week. Quality was
very good as a rule, a large proportion of
the receipts being of the long fed variety
and the proportion of common and im
matMre stock lielng comparatively small.
In- rows and Itetfera the market was
steady with yesterday and In spots a
shade stronger. Demand was broad and
while the light and helfery grades sold
to tne best advantage salesmen did not
find It so difficult to work off their
heavy gnd rough rattln, and there was a
strong, healthy undertone, to the trade
from start to finish. Hulla, stage and
calves found a ready sale at full recent
quotation
Cattle conditions were unfavorable for
any activity in stockers and feeders and
trend of values was lows-.' for all but the
choice offerings. Some of the fancy
yearlings arc selling about as well as a
week ago, but on the general run of
stock csttle and feeding sleets prices ar
