19 ONE OF FINEST IN LAND
An article of two' and ns-hair pares
with Illustration! appears In "Park and
Cemetery and Landscape Gardening,"
published In Chicago, on the new chapel
rnd crematory at Forest Lawn cemetery.
'No finer building- for Us purposo hsi
yet been erected In this country than the
r.ew chapel crematory and" receiving
valut at Omaha." says the article.
The building will be dedicated today.
"The architect has been rarely success
ful," continues the article. "In the statu?
classic -.leslgn for both exterior and In
terior. Hl treatment of the decorative
features of the Interior In detail, In color
scheme and in selection of material has
been especially effective. The harmoni
ous combination of marble, mosaic,
cereamlo and stained glass has produced
warm effect unusual in buildings of
this character and eliminates everything
In any way suggestive of the somber
aspect of mortuary structures. The pre
vailing Impression la one of cheer not
of gloom. The white Colorado Yule mar
ble selected for the interior contribued
richly In producing , the final effective
nd dignified whole.

"Fuel oil Is used for tho heat in the
retorts, but. the system differs from other
oil-burning types in that the oil Is preT
neatad -and", vaporised before it reaches
Jhe retort. This process eliminates the
usual spraying of the oil from the burner
into , the .retorts, and approaches very
closely to that most desirable condition
for this work Intense heat without
flame. The whole system is extremely
limple and effective in operation. The
absence of smoke and unburned gases is'
particularly noticeable.
"The two retorts are rectangular and
approximately of ; the ' following dimen
sions: Six feet wide, .twelve feet long
and seven feet high. The flues are con
structed under the floor.
"Owing to the extremely high tempera
ture obtained, which In certain parts of
the retorts reaches 8.000 degrees. Fahren-J
belt, the entire interior Is constructed of
especially made fire brick moulded from
a clay found only In western Pennsyl
vania. The retorts are encased tn red
trick masonry And cement!'

Shortly after the Omaha plant ' was
placed In commission it attracted the at
tention of the United States government
and Us builders were engaged to dupll-,
cat the Omaha Installation on the Isth
mus of Panama. 5He Panama crematory
was completed and the first cremation
was had February t, 1914. Up to the pres
ent time there have been f 878 cremations
at the Panama plant.
In crematory buildings where retorts
have been placed unffer the chapel It has
always been a problem to find , proper,
means for conveyance from floor to floor,
particularly as the buildings are often
located outside the limits of service lines
for electric power or. are too far from
the main lines of hydraulic power. " This
problem has been solved at the Forest
Lawn plant by the Installation of an ele
vator which consists of a plunger under
neath a platform operating through a
stuffing box into a cylinder. The power
plant consists of a street railway type
closed air compressor, with governor, air
tank reservoir, and oil tank reservoir.
This Is located at a convenient distance
from the hatchway, and In a small tank
there Is a supply of oil equal to the dis
placement of the plunger with necessary
reserve. The air reservoir Is normally
charged at ninety pounds pressure. When
lining the load, air Is discharged Into
the oil tank, forcing oil under the plun
ger, thus raising the load. When de
scending surplus air in the oil tank Is
discharged through a mufflor, the oil
being forced back Into the tank and used
over again.
