CHICAGO GRAIN AND PROVISIONS
Fretaree of the Trading; aaA Closing;
' Prices oa Board of Trade.
CHICAGO. May 1. Although deliveries
n May contracts proved to be heavier
than looked for, the wheat market today
I co red an- advance, helped by the faot
that the deliveries went Into strong
hands and that stocks promised a falling
6ft. The olose was- nervous at 4o to
c abov last night. Corn gained Ho
lo i&lo, net; oats, o to l0o, and
provision to to 150. '
- Rapidly decreasing supplies northwest
ind a prospect of large shipments to the
taut from Chicago had a good deal to do
with developing - bullish sentiment re
tarding wheat Large elevators and ex
port Interests were said to have taken
all the wheat delivered here on specula
tive options for the current month. Be
lief quickly spread that most of the
grain would be sent forward from here
as soon as possible, chief It export. Ac
cordingly, general buying set in after a
brief show of weakness at the start and
kept the market tending upward until
lust at the close.
Need ot rain east of the Mississippi
continued to act as a discouragement for
wheat bears- Only scattered - showers
reported, wholly insufficient to relieve
the dryness of the subsoil. Some author
ities asserted the crop could go ten days
lucre without damage, but others main
tained that unless adequate moisture
tame soon the result would be lowered
Conditions and disappointing ylolds at
harvest.
Corn displayed strength from the out
let. There were rumors of business at
the seaboard and no doubt was ex
pressed but that most of the corn de
livered her to cash houses today would
be shipped east. Notwithstanding that
warehouse tenders of eats amounted to
1,000.000, as much aa for wheat and corn
together, pit offerings of oats were
Oulckly absorbed, with more wanted. Por
tion demand was reported good.
Deliveries of provisions were not aa
large as expected. In consequence .the
market hardened, regardless of a decline
n the price of hogs.
