Farm of an Early
Pioneer is Placed
on Open Market
One of the oldest and largest farms In '
Douglas county la now en the market,
following the recent death of the original
and only owner of record, the lata John
Hallenbeck, whose homatead papers were
lamed by Abraham Lincoln.
The farm Is KO acre, and will be sold
by the Payne Investment company In
quarter section at an averaae price of
I142.SU an acre. It Is Just on mile west
of Millard. 'When Hallenbeck got It the
value waa only a few dollars an acre.
He came to Omaha from Nsw York
state In a prairhi schooner in liiT, w hen ,
thla city wa only a little fort. He and
a partner opened a small hotel, but the
partner absconded ever night with all
the funds, so Hallenbeck filed on a home
stead and was an active farmer until
his death last September at the age
of IT.
Hallenbeck was a friend of Senator J.
H. Millard and of the late A. J, Simp
son, pioneer carriage irutksr. Frequently,
the pioneer farmer and hi family had
to flee from their farm and take refuge
in tbe Omaha fort, because of Indian
depredation In the early daya. He sit
out 18ft acres In fine trees, which are
still standing, because tbe nearest nat
ural timber was on the Elkhoru and
Platte rivers, seven and ten miles dis
tant.
Hallenbeck borrowed money at 4 per
cent Interest, In ordcr to buy a learn of
Durham cows, which he milked and also
worked In his fields. Hi nephuwa,
Mesara. lUIIenbeck and Drown, menu-
factursra, at Qloversvtlle, N. 1 ., are
executors of the estate, and they have
decided to sell the fimous old farm.
Edward Blmon, the author of the loan
Shark Law, designed te keep the loan
hark from charging exorbitant rates of
