SIR HENRY CALLED DOWN
Executive of South Australia Criti
cized for Suggesting Country
Should Be Kept White.
PRIME MINISTER TAKES A HAND
(Corresponded e of the Associated Press.)
MELBOfRNK. Australia, April J.-Tha
aubject of "White Australia" and the
question of admitting Asiatic Immigrants
recently was iliacuseed publicly by one
of the rtate governors in the common
wealth, with the immediate remilt that
he waa officially asked for an explana
tion, and h expressed his regret that he
had said anything at all on that head.
The executive who spoke his mind was
Sir Henry Ualway of South Australia, and
It was tha prime minister of the com
monwealth, Andrew Fisher, who called
him to account.
Sir Henry waa speaking at a luncheon
at an agricultural fair In South Australia
and he devoted part of hi speech to the
northern territory, the huge nrea in the
UODer nart of Australia which la iinAar
j federal control through the medium of
I an administrator. It la a murlt debated
queatlon how tho territory Is to be set
tled for the development It need. Sir
Henry said among other thing:
"Looking generally at the future of
i this vast continent I am Inclined to think
that the hardest nut the federal govern
ment has to track Is the development of
tli northern territory. How that terri
tory ia rolns? to he develoned h, white
i labor alone I for on am unable to con
ceive. .
"By all means have a 'White AurtreJIa.'
If under that principle you can develop
th country. It otherwise, It would be a
thousand pltlo to allow what Is un
doubtedly a splendid country to remain
undeveloped purely on isocount of a
White Australia policy.
"Looking at th splendid services being
rendered Ia lha i
i - - - ... ij 1 1 u j vur inui&n
troops and by our Japanese allies I am
I one oi moss wno mink that the feelings
vi auiiwiim on mo coior question will
undergo considerable or should I say
a softening-change when the war is
over."
The day following this comment Mr.
FIher said that If Sir Henry had been
oorrectly quoted his words constituted "a
grave official Indiscretion." which could
not he allowed to pass without protest.
Thereupon he telegraphed to tho premier
of Bouth Australia asking him to ascer
tain whether th governor had Mid what
hsd been Imputed to him.
Sir Henry replied to the premier that
th newspaper reports of his speech were
correct: that It would h,u v,..
j If he had not touched upon the color
uesuon and that he was sorry ho had
lone so. This closed the Incident.
