CHICAGO 4,R AIN AND PROVISIONS
Feat a res of the Trading and Cloelngt
Prices on Board ot Trade.
CHICAGO,- April 1. Shorts evening- up
for the holiday tomorrow more than off
set ln the wheat market today the In
fluence of possibilities ot a larger dom
estio crop this year than last. Feeling
waa unsettled at the close, which
ranged from He to lc above last night's
level. Corn gained "4c to He net and oats
H4)'Vio to fao. In provisions tho out
come varied from 2 Vic decline to a rise
of fc.
It bees me evident about the middle of
tho session that selling of wheat had
been overdone. Offering on the part
of venturesome traders were found to
have largely gone into strong hands and
It was necessary to bid prices sharply
before bears who wished to be free at
the closing bid could .find a way out.
The private sentiment early against the
bulls came about chiefly aa . estimates
by a loading authority tending to show
that prospects at present wore for the
wheat yield of the United States ln 1915
being greater than the record breaking
harvest or ma.
Many scattered complaints or drv
weather In Illinois and oi hessian fly and
of freexing and thawing In other states
were of considerable errect In helping
the wheat market to rally from the low
point of the day. Foreign crop reports
too were less encouraging.
Corn awuna utwsrd with wheat and as
a consequent of reports of liberal onah
buying on the part of big Industries. The
nurchssing referred to. however, was saH
to he merely replacing at a lower price
equal amounts Hold elsewhere. Predic
tions that seeding in Iowa and Nebraska
would be the latest ln years gave some
Independent firmness to oats. At first,
however, the bears had an advantage be
cause of Oklahoma reports of an acreage
Increase of 3a Der cent.
Word or a emauer enlargement or
stocks than expected turned the provi
sion market from weakness to strength

Thera waa a better feeling In beef steers
this morning. Buyers were out in gooo
season and nicked up the cream of tna
offerings at prices that were strong to a
little higher than yesterday, ine nanay
light cattle were th moat sought after.
Good heavy cattle, however, sold to
little better advantage possibly than yes
terday. Aa high as $7.75 was paid for tha
best beeves here.
Cows and heifers were strong snd tha
market reasonably active on everything
desirable. Common Inferior grades were
a little slow, and still they commanded
steady nrices.
For this lata ln the week the demand
for feeders waa good, the market being
firm on everything desirable.

RAIL ISSUES ARE ACTIVE
NKW TORK, April 1 The stock mar
Vet todav reflected In greater measure
the mixed and confused conditions which
have been Its recent -characteristics.
Business was lighter and narrower than
In yesterday's record seeaton. but activity
ana strength were aaaln most pronounced
In railway issues of secondary Impor
tance, rhlefly Rock Island and F1e, to
gether with automobile and other spectal
Issues.
Former leaders like the transconti
nental group, I'nlted States Steel and
Amalgamated Copper were under mod
erate pressure for the greater part of the
day, but made some Improvement later.
Altogether the day's operations aero of
an ultra-professional character, with the
usxial settlement ot contracts which pro
cedes a holiday.
Sentiment was undoubtedly cotiraged hy
the action of the exchange authorities In
abolishing minimum prices and removing;
all other artificial restraints, but thla
feeling waa neutralised In conservstlvo
quarters, where criticism ever ohvlouaj
manipulation In certain speculative spe
cialties haa Increased.
Lowest price were registered In the
final hour, by which time much of th
early rise had been effaced. Rock Ialand
not only loat alt Its Initial gain, but mad"
a net loss of 3S polnta. Reading wag
again offered freely at moderate conces
sions and the balance of the list showed,
the effects of realising galea. Weakness
In France wag the noteworthy feature of
the foreign market, this being accepted
as an Indication that the effect of the,
new French credit had already been dla
counted. Marks were slightly lower, with
a very limited demand, and remittances
on London were offered at a arery sllghc
concession.
Some more favorable railway returns fo
February were reported. New York Cen-,
tral showing a net Increase of $46,000, and
the Pennsylvania's Income east snd west
of Pittsburgh Increasing $&S,Ou0 and $44,-.
000, respectively.
Total aales of stocks amounted to 541,400,
