307, better known as the Tom Hall bill,
la dead, unless the house can muster
fifty-one votes to resurrect It, which la
doubtful.
The bill Is one Introduced by five mem
bers of the lower houae at the request of
Commissioner Hall, Mer. Hoffmelirter,
Taylor, Sorenaon, LavBounty and Nichols.
It place the power In the hands of the
State Railway commleslon to forbid es
tablishment of competing public utilities
In a community where there I already
on In existence and the commission fig
ures that th competing line 1 not nece
ssry. It was the interest taken In thla bill
by tha commissioner that brought out a
protest from sevenl members of the
home and resulted In sn open letter by
th other commissioners, Clarke and Tay
lor denying that they had any Interest
In tha bill.
Tha house commute reporting out the
bill recommended it fur psnsage, but
Iloffmelsttr moved Its Indefinite post
ponement. In this he waa Joined by two
others of th Introducers. Taylor and Sor
enaon, and the bill was killed.

thrived for a day or so and hordes of
hungry were fed.
"The only thing they left was tha sign
'Restaurant for the Unemployed,' " said

"They even took the gas range."
MULLEN URGES DEMOCRATS
TO POP CONVENTION PLAN

Mullen anpeared before' the constitutional
smendment committee of the senate and

were not in favor of a constitutional con
vention. Mr. Mullen said the democratic party
had not Included the measure In Its plat
form, while tha republican party had
done so. Tha voters had given their ap-

fested a fear that if the election were

would control the situation.
Weesnor of Webster then charged the
Douglas county men with bad faith, when
they requested to ba excused from vot
ing on th rest of th measure, aaylng
that they had promised him their 'Sup
port. Finally forced to voto, the Douglas
count delegation Intentionally split its
vote. It members denied any promise.

Grand Island Resort Burned.
GRAND ISLAND. Neb., March S. (Spe
cial Telegram. Fire lata today totally
destroyed the largest of the houses In
the former proscribed district, the prop
erty of Venus Webber. The building had
been constructed at a cost of over 110,000
and was equipped with costly furniture.
The property being out of the water lim
its the department waa unable to fight the
fire. The loss Is considerable.
