Zeppelin Departs
After Air Battle
GENEVA, Switzerland, Feb. 15.-A
thrilling aerial battle between a Zeppelin
dirigible balloon and three French aero
plane was witnessed yesterday by thou
fands of Germsn and French troops in
the trenches, a little south of Muelhausen,
In Upper Alsace.
The Zeppelin came from the Black
forest and was sailing toward Belfort
when It met the aeroplanes, which were
' flying much lower. A battle ensued and
the conflict lasted about forty minutes,
both sides keeping up a continuous fire.
The aeroplanes struggled to reach a
higher level which would place them
above the dirigible, and had almost suc
ceeded when the Zeppelin retired to the
north at great speed.

U. S. NATIONAL A SAMPLE
When the Brotherhood of Bank
Burglars and United Veggmen of the
World hold their annual convention this
rar one of the subjects dtocussed. no
doubt, will be the growing difficulties of
the profession.
".Nitroglycerin Nat" insy, perchance,
read paper on this topic, pointing out
the piactical Impossibility of making an
honest living robbing banks nowadays
and deploring t lie slowness of the "pro
fesh" In keeping ur with the Improve
ments made In modern bank vaults.
In this connection Nat will probably
call his pals' attention to the vault now
belna Inwtalled la the new United Ftates
National Bank building. Omaha.
Here Is a vault built of steel and con
crete of such thickness and strength as
to dls'-ourage the most optimistic burglar.
The vault room has walls of concrete,
heinforccd with steel in meshes, ihf walls
being eighteen Inches thick. Inside this
ore steel plates several Inches thick In
three layers, the middle layer being
nianganese steel, which cannot be bored
by any tool known today.
tttatht Mn" Safes,
The vault is divided into two parts by
a row of vertical ateel bars. In the Inner
ran of the vault behind these bars will
stand eight, safes, made of manganese
steel. Each of these weighs four tons.
They will be used to contain the ctir
rency. Presuming the very unlikely thing that
any member of the United Yeggmen
should ever penetrate thus fsr, he would
be confronted with the important but un
solvable question. "Which of these safes
contains the Ms and fiOs. and which Is
Just cluttered up with Is or Is."
In this part of the vault will be nlso
the boxes for storing silver and gold.
The outer part of the vault will con
tain 2.100 safety deposit boxes to be
rented to the public.
The total weight of steel In the vault
will be 339,000 pounds. The door alone
(which was standing on the street several
clays last week), weighs TO.OOO pounds.
Vet this enromous weight (about equal
to the weight of 6o0 men) will be so per
fectly balanced upon Its hinges that one
man will be able to open or close it
easily.
This door Is controlled by a time lock.
At the back of the vault will be a small
"emergency door," Just big enough to
admit the body of a man. This small
j door will weigh 8.000 pounds.
i And so, "Nitroglycerin Nat-' may well
nddress the despondent gathering of his
fellows and mourn the happy days gone
by when bank safes flew open In easy
response to a bit of "soup" poured In
the crack of the door.
He may well mourn the Injustice of the
woild wi.lch I s tlevi.t siirh lnipeneir.t

What the
German-Americans Are
Organizing For
In this week's issue of The Literary Digest (Feb. 13th,
on sale to-day), there is an article which fully describes the
organization activities of the German-Americans in the
United States who and what the organizers and the organ
izations are, and what they are trying to accomplish. This
article clearly reflects public opinion regarding this very
grave and newest development of the war and is of great
interest to the American public, who will want to know:
Whether this movement will influence America's neutrality attitude;
Whether its activities will be directed for or against political
candidates for office;
What effect it will have in connection with the next Presidential
campaign;
' Whether or not such a plan of organizing sentiment will react
upon those responsible for promulgating it.
Not only does THE LITERARY DIGEST cover the Great War in the
most unbiased and reliable way, reprinting striking cartoons, photographs, and
documents, opinions of leading men and women actually engaged in the
conflict; but all other important topics that vitally concern mankind through
out the world are dwelt upon. Foreign and Domestic Politics, Invention,
Science, Commerce, Literature, Religion, Art, Music, and Drama all the
news in these spheres of activity is presented for the information of THE
DIGEST'S million readers.
