CHICAGO GRAIN AND PROVISIONS
Features of the Tradlasi aad Closlnar
1 Prices on Hoard of Trade.
CHICAGO, Jan. I.t.-fnllmltod and at
times excited buying was the rulo todsy
In the wheat trade, with oximrters and
millers racing for supplies. Sethiu-ks
failed to last aad the market closed
strong ut 14C to WSii'io above last
night. Corn finished Ww1 to ', not
lower, oats unchanged to Vklf'ic otf and
provisions down 7i25c.
It was said at the end of business this
afternoon that nearly all of the stock
of wheat In Chicago hud been disposed
of, and that foreign buyers wero now
working most energetically on the spring
wheal at Buffalo and Duluth. Inability
of Chicago dealers to purchase any large
amounts from rural hohlers except at a
radii ui advance had much to, do with the
flnul strength of prices here and the re
newed fever to buy. Country n. liters
were said to be outbidding Chicago of.
fers. especially In Nebraska.-
At the crest of the advance today,
wheat reached to within o of the top
most quotations since the beginning of
the war and showed a rise of 7'o since
the worst of the break during the flurry
Monday about the supiKised Impending
overturn of Turkish con'.rrl of the Dar.
danelles. Unfavorable harvest weather In
Argentina and rlnlng vessel rates from
Buenos Ayres to English, ports counted
hard against the Iwars.
Piling up of stocks of oorn neutralised
In that grain the effect of tho wheat
bulge.. A steadying lnfluenoe, however,
was tha fact that oorn In Uverpool waa
selling at nearly tl bushel. Oata wero
i,..t,i rinwn hv heavy selling on the part
of one of the largest houaes here. On the
other hand there was an acuve inquiry.
Unloading of lard for recent buyers
pulled down provisions. Packers and other
Stock yards Interests wera conspicuous
on the selling side.

HOvS ttncolpta were liberal today,

consigned direct to a packer from another

Tim market opened dull, with tho feel

In the forenoon most of everything on
sale began til change hands on a basts

case on Tuesday, the trade was more or
less uneven, making It very difficult for
sellers to do business. There waa no Im
portant change In the general quality of
the offerings and the clearance waa late.
Tha early sales Included some fed west

terion from which to Judge the general
market, which waa drsggy with prices
lower.
The bearish Influence was attributed
to tha big run at most all market points,
snd especially at Chicago and Buffalo, so
fur for the week. The packer buyers
claimed the situation on the eastern
dressed markets did not warrant the con
tinuance of the high schedule prices thut
had prevailed on the local market of late.
The situation In feeders remained pretty
much tha ssme as on Tuesday and Mon
day, the receipts being light, hut the In-,

day. Early transactions Included some

trade during the week haa been a little
slow a fairly good clearance has been
effected. Tha receipts of mules havt
been light as ha also the demand, owing
to the lack of southern buyer.
