was the habit in the time of out granddstnss, baa been relegated ju7n-7 i:"rZ'v
to a solitary corner of the fhelf, and the wonder In, will It ever be
revived?
So have we progressed, even In our play time, that New Year's day In
inourrn unnn wn.n u fxnionienis ana pleasures away from ouw
own firesides, and we all seem to think that our venerable ancestors did
not know the fun held for the investigating one.
Just the other day a few of the old-timers of Omaha were chatting
ovpr their yesterdays, and being in the full awing of the Yuletlde atmos
phere, the topic most discussed war the pleasures attending the time-hon
ored custom of kpeplng open house on New Year's day. How the men, all
dolled up In their best Mb and tucker, and with fclclgh and sleigh bells (the
larger the better), sallied forth to extend New Year's greetings.
Only one of Omaha's households has held to this old cordial custom.
Hillside," the home of Mr. and Mrs. Henry W. Yates, has always extended
a special greeting to Its friends New Year's day.
It was always the rendezvous for a corterle of Omahans every New
Year, and Its many friends will always remember the pleasures behind Its
doors. Illness in the family will prevent this time-honored custom be'lng
held to this New Year.

HAND
Notice is hereby given that a notorious
criminal is at large in this city. He is the
author of a score of crimes, particularly
fiendish in the methods employed.
He has completely eluded the police, for he has
no clue as to his identity, except s mark of a clutch
ing hand, by which he has come to be known.
His ways are peculiar, his motive for activity
being indefinable. He turns up anywhere
attacks anybody. He goes from a palace to a
lowly hovel ; from a little child to an old lady.
The beautiful woman is not beyond him, nor
the strong one.
He does not work in the ordinary way. His
schemes are awful and ghastly. He must be a
scientist gone awry.
This warning is therefore made in order to put
every family on its closest guard.
Women I Lock your doors !
Men ! Do not go out unprotected.
The "Clutching Hand" is worse than anycrhn
inal of the last century for here the favorite pursuit
is murder,
Rewards are offered for the detection and arrest
of the "Clutching Hand." Send all information to
