CHTCAOO, Oct. .-Notwithstanding that
wheat at one time today showed a sub
stantial upturn, the bears had the advan
tage during most of the session. A heavy
total for the stocks on band In the United
States, and Canadu counted agninst the
bulls. Trices closed weak, lWU'lV under
Inst night. Other lending staples, ton,
all suffered a net decline -corn. M)le;
oats. Hc, and provisions, 65V.
DomoNtlfl and Canadian slocks of wheat
were estimated at 100.000,000 bushels, an
aggregate of more than 7,0O.0OO bushels
In excers of the sum at the corresponding
time a year ago. It wss after the an
nouncement of this faot that the market
took a decided downward slant from
which there was no Important reaction.
Disappointment In regard to fresh ex
port business counted against the hulls.
It was asserted that the demand from
Great Britain and France had been well
satisfied for the time being, and that
only Italy and Holland were active as
transatlantic bidders.
Suspicion that export business was a
good deal larger In volume than had been
generally acknowledged formed the chief
basis of a temporary advance In wheat
soon after the opening. In this connec
tion, mills northwest of here were said
to have offers for Immense quantities of
flour. Including a single lot of UO.iioo bar
rels. It waa noticed, however, thst later
on there were numerous orders here from
the northwest to sell wheat.
Corn gave way under predictions thst
the government report tomorrow would
assure nn Incrense of 60,000.000 bushels In
the probable yield this season. Failure
of expected rains tended also to weaken
the market
In oats sentiment was chiefly adverse
to the bulls. F.xnort call waa declared to
have been lighter than for several days
Lower prices for hogs csfrled down
provisions. A contributing Influence was
the slowness of the rash demand for
meats.

CATTLE Receipts fslr. Total for two
days, 18.713 head. 6.000 head smaller than
last week, but about the same aa a year
ago.
Heef steers of good quality were very
scarce, there being no good oornfeds and
very few good rangers. The market on
the better grades waa a little stronger
than yesterday, or 104T16O higher for the
two daya. The medium to common grades
were steady and a little ineunea to oa
slow.
Cows and heifers did not show much hf
anv change, the trade being slow, nut
still with prices on such cattle as buyers
really wanted, generally ateady. In some
rases the reeling, It anyining, waa a
little weak. i
Good feeder steers were free sellers at
prices a Utile stronger than yesterday,
or lOfflfto higher than last weea. m
common to medium grades were ex
tremely hard to move at any price, neing
neglected from start to finish. It Is need
less to say that prices on cattle of that
description was downward.

HOOS Receipts were fairly liberal this
morning, and with other markets all re-
forted slow at sharp declines, tlja local
rade opened out In poor shape. Ship
per buyers bought the best mixed hogs
and a few loads of sorted lights at prloes
that were quoltd as generally a dime
lower. Several bunches of mixed hogs,
with the weightier end sorted nut, sold
as high as $a 0t. Packers' first offers
were innde on a 15r lower basis, and while
nothing sold for quite a while, values
failed to show any improvement, and
when the bulk of the hogs finally started
to move, prices looked to be all of (&16e
lower, while some salesmen quoted Indi
vidual sales as a flat 16o lower. Trade
was more or less dull all the way
through, as sellers were Inclined to give

went to the packers yesterday at $7 16.
The best lambs on sale commanded $7.60,
with the bulk of the holdings moving at

we'ghed up hy 11 o'clock.
No important changea were apparent In
