'LITTLE GIANT' WANTS PEACE
Demo Chairman Goei Over Nebraska
Situation with Senator.
HITCHCOCK FOR SETTLEMENT

State Jobs Still ta Air, Dae to

Seatatoa
. (From a Staff Correspondent.)
WASHINGTON, Sept. 2. (Special Tele
gram.) "The little giant of .Grand Is
land," Chairman W. II. Thompson of tha
democratic state committee, and Senator
Hitchcock "got down to brass tacks" to
day In a number of Nebraska patronage
matters when the two held a long con
ference over what already has been done
In ths distribution of political pie In the
prairie state and what possibly may be
done In the future, the near future, mean
ing, of course, wnat may be accomplished
toward feeding the hungry at the pie
counter before election day rolls around.
Bryan Not la Capital.
Had Secretary Bryan been in the city,
Judge Thompaon would at once have re
paired to him following the Interview with
Senator Hitchcock and endeavored to ar
range a truce at leaat of some sort by
which the democrats of the state could
be lined up In harmony for the confllot
In November. Possibly the "little pacifi
cator," as the democratic chairman has
come to be known, may wait for this
purpose until Mr. Bryan comes back,
he said tonight, poaaibly not At any rate,
he said he would like to take back home
some cheering news for the faithful.
- Offices Still la Air.
Neither Senator Hitchcock nor Judge
Thompson would go Into any details re
garding their conference today. Con
siderable of the time was taken np In
going over the poatofflce appointment
made by Senator Hitchcock In the three
congressional dlatrtcta represented by re
publicans In the houae. Slxty-nlne of
these appolnteea have been confirmed by
the senate, while ten poatofflce recom
mendations made by the senator have not
yet been acted upon by the administra
tion. "Judge Thompson seems to think It is
Important to gat Nebraska patronage
mattergadjuated at this time." said Sen
ator Hitchcock after the conference, and
then with much emphasis added:
Hitchcock Agrees.
"And I thoroughly and heartily agree
with htm. Recommendations I have made
for a number of receivers and registers of
land offices have not been acted upon, and
In each instance Judge Thompson agrees
with me that they are selections that are
good ones and should he decided upon one
way or the other. Outside of these posi
tions and the ten postoftlces referred to
we are pretty well up with Nebraska
patronage with the exception of the throe
Important offices of district attorney,
marshal and collector of Internal revenue,
and If Mr. Bryan and I can come to some
understanding they will be disposed of
promptly."
Will the "little pacificator,- with all his
political acumen and earnestness, at this
critical stage of the campaign be able to
bring theae two warring statesmen to
that much-to-be-dealred "understanding!''
Is the queatton Waahlngton la asking to
night He will tackle the job, however,
big as It Is. H he decides to await Mr.
Bryan's return, which will be next Tues
day. Politics that Will
Mix with Religion
Is Need of the Day
"We want politics that will mix with
religion; we want religion that will mix
with politics. It necessary we want the
churches and the schools thrown .open
for meetings of a political nature," said
Mra D. La Craighead, addressing an un
responsive audience, chiefly of women,
at Walnut Hill school last night She
produced the several arguments In favor
of woman suffrage and said the duty of
men Is to vote for the Nebraska suffrage
amendment In November.
A gang of rowdy boys almost broke up
tha meeting. The speaker was compelled
to pause several times until a lanltor
quieted the gang. "
Mrs. Craighead said the women would
see that there were clean polling places;
would abolish child labor and would as
sumo and uphold the responsibilities of
the ballot as well as men.
"The responsibility of training a son
for cltlsenahlp belongs -to ths woman,"
Mra Craighead continued. "If a woman
can train a son to be a good cltlsen why
should she not herself be a good cltlsenT
There Is no excuse for withholding the
ballot front women."
