corn waa offered more freely by the

CHICAGO. Aug. JO. Yesterday' gain In
wheat was lost on profit-taking sale to-
osy ana tn close was weak, initc net
lower. Corn dropped ifi'i oat So and
provision WKi5c, the latter In January
pork. The market was almost purely
speculative.
Wheat opened He down, but recovered
momentarily and went Nc over yesterday,
hut the firmness was a mere flurry
Thereafter the trend was downward
mostly because longs contused by con
flicting reports of the exporting situa
tion, thought It well to secure their
profits. Recent alleged export sales were
not confirmed, and one explanation of
recent rumors was that exporters had
been selling to each other. A notice from
the local British consul declaring that
the timidity of shippers about foreign
sale was not Justified reached the trade
after the close. The consul said that the
shippers will he protected by the Bank
of England. The clone was only lc over
tne tHittom ror tne day.
The decline m corn was Influenced by
the rains, but the market was relatively
steadier than wheat, due largely to local
ouying on tne brenK. 1 ountry orrerlng
were small.
France was reported In the market for
oats at the seaboard, but hlda her were
out of line and profit-taking by specu-
ator and the persistent selling of a big
elevator concern reduced the price.
provisions also aurrered rrom pront
taking, although a shipping demand for
lard developed on the break. Expectation
of a freer movement of hogs next week
also was an Influence. -

Price continued to move upward thl
morning, and while trad was dull

tns early tale to shippers and specu

Packers were slow In starting out and
their first bids were no more than steady
with yesterday's average. Price Improved
lowly a th morning advanced, however,
and when, after a very draggy session,
th bulk of the supply finally started to
move, values were fully steady with
Wednesday's high close, and looked at
least strong to a nickel higher than the
average market. la fact, quite a number
of Individual aalea appeared to be a flat
nickel higher. Generally speaking the
packer market Is no more than strong to

SHEEP A continuation of liberal re
ceipts, amounting to soma 13.000 bead,
was an outstanding feature in hep and
lamb thl morning. Chicago had a light
run for a Thursday, the supply there be
ing estimated at no more than about 1,000
head. Today's grnerous run, along with,
lllwral recclptn on the prevlou days of
the week, makea a large total for th
week thus far, there being all told soma
62.216 head reported at the yards, a com
pared with 51,tt!2 last week, M,iMn iwb
week ago and 46.700 for the correspond
ing time a year ago. The receipts 4oday
were mostly lamb and th aupply or
rged offering waa light like It haa been
of late.
Hovers were In th barn early as
timial, but sellers were all asking higher
prices, largely on account of the em el
run at Chicago and elsewhar. nothing
much changed hands until after 11 o'clock.
Thus In the end the market could o
summed tip a alow on both aheeoi and
lambs, with prices steady to strong with
yesterday's general trade. It might ha
added that lambs closed strong yesterday
and the last aale Included soma Idaho
lambs at $8 25.
There was no Important change in Tho
feeder trade, aa It waa still a case of the)
ulk or th feec.ing sheep and lambs De
ng active sellers at prices fully steady.
The supply of suitable feeding lambs
such as are In the best demand were in
moderate supply as compared with the
ior pari 01 me wee a. 1 wo car or,
Wyoming feeding awes, weighing around
106 pound, were weighed up early at
$4.00.
