When the fact la noted that there were
heavy purchases of hog and beef products
yetteida.' and that enormous quantities
of canned meats are aelllng to the coun
trlr now o unused In warfare tor the
purpose of feeding their soldiers that
there mut be opened an avenue on the
seas through which breadstuffs and pro
vixlons may be safely shipped.
There are bearish condltlone surround
ing the breadstuffs situation, however,
that must be overcome. Cash aheat la as
hesvy as lead. There was no new export
business In any position yesterday and
them were canrellatkme of raeh grain
on the part of buyera who are unable to
make ahlpmrnts or gialn to the old world.
The British grain trade, according to spe
cial rabies reels more confident of the
situation. Flour In that market was ad
vanced 4.
The wheat market, while showing gains
of til'nc yesterday, waa quite erratic.
The opening waa distinctly there,-and thla
was followed by a rally of 4c on Hie May.
And while all prices at tho close were
higher, the deferred futures showed tho
greatest strength. The Northwestern
markets were stronger than here.
A feature of the cash whvnt market
was the order to divert many cargoea of
wheat to Huffalo and New York and
which were Intended for Montreal.
Prlcea for corn climbed to still higher
levela, with closing rigures mtHHo higher.
Rain In some sections of the belt caused
a little selling at the outset and weak
ened prices, but quickly rallied and
ateadlly advr.nced. The bulge in wheat
stimulated buying, as did the strength in
cash corn and continued unfavorable
crops advices. There was much new
buying yesterday and offering" were
light all through the session. Tho east
wns again buying cash corn here in lsrge
amounts and shippers wwre for.-ed to cur
tall their purchases because the rouutry
Is sending tn such light supplies.
Higher prices were also established In
oats yMtrday. Best figures showed
gains of about a cent over the previous
close but there waa considerable reaction
from this level. There was a good gen
eral trade, with locals the best buyera.
Longs were disposed to realise on the
bulge and It was largely due to this
pressure that the market owed Its re
action. Shorts in provisions were In veritable
panlo and forced prices up sensationally.
The absence of offerings waa compara
tively light and there waa a supply on
sale all through the session. This, with
the sharply higher hog market, small
receipts and prospects ot selling- large
quantities of product abroad, was more
than sufficient to create buying scare. In
addition to the short covering the pack
ers were buying and (here was more
miscellaneous outside call for product.
Pork showed the most strength and
closed $L70 higher. The rscent heavy de
clines In hoc values have checked ship
ping and recelpta at western points
totaled only 23.SU0, as compared with 01,-
sm a year ago.
Wheat was unchanged to lc higher.
Corn waa unchanged to IV" higher.
Oats were to c higher.
Clearances of wheat and Tour were

tiny, as prices there are the highest this
side of the Atlantic, with all materially
above $1.00 a bushel. One dispatch from
'Winnipeg said the British government
waa preparing to move wheat Immedi

and more to follow as quickly as possible.
The United States government crop re
port turned out according to predictions
regarding the total y'old expected, an In
crease In winter wheat offsetting the
losses In spring.
Com ruled strong and new crop futures
reached the highest prices ot the year.
Belief that the government estimates
would prove unusually bullish were more
than confirmed after the market had
closed, it being shown that the probable
shortage due to drouth and heat was far
greater than generally supposed. Oats ad
vsnued Independently of other grain. It
waa asserted the English government
would be likely to require oats freely
from this country and that the Canadian
supply was insufficient.
Provisions continued to climb. Rxorp
tlonal advances were reported at Liver
pool, and domestic receipts of hogs were
dwindling. Speculative transactions In
riork, lard and ribs here were at times
mposslble, the market being entirely
bare of of fere.

a market The feeling, however, waa
fully steady and buyers claimed that they
could have used more cattle If they had
been here.
Everyone Is looking forwsrd with Inter
est to next week and there Is a general
leellng that . financial conditions having)
settled down somewhat there will be a
very decent buying demand on the part
of packers. As a matter of course no one,
not even the packers themselves, can tell
In advance what the requirements of the
market will be next week, but at present
writing there Is nothing In sight to
leave one to anticipate other than a very
fair demand. As a matter of course no
one , would .like to see excessive runs at
any point, as buyers under such condi
tions would be almost certain to pound
prices. Eastern markets are hone too

HOOSThe lightest run of the week
showed up this morning, only eleven cars,
or about 700 head, being received. The
total for the five days amounts to t.&l
head, being about a fourth the else of
the supply for the same days ot both last
Week end a year ago.
In filling the scant orders they had
this morning, packers did lust what they
were afraid of doing on Thursday, that
is. they cams Into competition with tha
shippers and speculators on the few load
of fresh hogs that were here, and prices
proceeded to soar. There never was any
real trsdlng established. Each salesman
ssked what he thought he oould get, and
In the majority of cases he got It, with
the result that hogs sold anywhere from
26c to. In extreme rases. 60o above Thurs
day. With so few hogs here, there is no
use In trying to quote the average mar
ket, and all that can be dope Is to com
pare Individual sales for the two days,
which Is, st the best, an unsatisfactory
method. Today's prices ranged all the
way from tS.OD to as high a UM. Ship
pers again bought the long end of the
aupply, and one packer who t'.ld succeed
In filling an order, only got three or four
loada. This buyer quoted his purchase
as 40c above yesterday.
Today's trade Indicates a condition thst
while much better than during the
earlier part of the week, Is still far from
normsl, In that It Is absolutely feverish.
Packers are almost afraid to get in while
the receipts remain so light, as every
bid they mske has to come Into direct
competition with a shipper or speculator
offer. It la safe to say though that the
market Is now adjusting Itself to the un
usual conditions, snd prices are rapidly
regaining all that they lost on their big
drop the first half of the week.

The situation today was much th same

points, while the local trade has been

recelpta at other marketa, the local hov
ers were willing to allow another ad
vance, resulting In the bulk of lambs be
ing active sellers at prices strong to 10
to 18 cents higher than, yeeterdny and
fully a quarter better than the close of
the previous week. Practically all the
decent killing lambs moved at $125. the
top being l&.M. There were some lambs ,.
at $7.i (hat went to the packers, hut.--these
were light and something on the
feeder order. Sorting in all cases was.
likht and the culls and seconds sold as
killers, the same as on the previous daya
of the week.
A very moderate supply of ewes snd
yearlings today moved readily, showing
an advance of 10 to IS cents over yesr- ,
day. No wethers were In sight. Fat
ewes ranged all Ihe nay from 84.76 to .

sheep are also a quarter higher than a

Accused of Bobbing
Herman Fanner Boys '
' BLAIR, Neb., Aug. 7.-(Speclal Tele- '
gram.) Charles Adams was brought from
Herman this afternoon by Sheriff Cotnp
ton and will be given a preliminary hear
ing tomorow -on the charge of highway
robbery. Late laat evening Adams and
three other hoboes enticed Qlen Stroble
and John McPherson, two young boys
about 1$ years old, who had been working
on a farm near Herman, to a distance of'
about a mile south of town and robbed,
Btroble of 660 and McPherson of $13.
They then tied the boys' hands behind
them and cutting a hole through the col
lar of their coat pulled It over their,
hand and relied It The toys were'
threatened with death If they mad any
alarm.
One of the boys worked himself loose
and notified the Herman night police
who organised a posse and canght Adams
as lie was boarding a midnight freight.
The other three made their escape.
Adams had 87.60 In his pockets and to
night was Identified as the man who
broke into the private room of Landlord
Petersen of the .Clifton hotel at Blair
and tole a lot of silverware last week.
