WEATHER CONTROLS CORN Falire Prtrejt at ellow Cereal Nov Depead I poa the Amsast af Molstare In the Nest Thirty Days. OMAHA. August S. 1114 The general belief in gram circles at Chicago la that England cannot afford to lake actual chances In becoming en gaged In thj political situation. It well known that England la dependent upo" the exporting countries of the world for the actual necessities and the nation must keep open the water routes es pecially between the United Wates and the I'nlted Kingdom, so much needed supplies can be sent Into them. rtocks of breadstuffs In the I'nlted Kingdom are abnormal as shown by the most re cent cables. Crop prospectt In the Argentine are as grod as was generally believed two weeks ago and crop losses In Russia have been unusually heavy, lessee In Russia have not only been In wheat but In barley and oats as well. Never In the history of grain markets of the United States were conditions so promising to the producer of grain as before the political cloud settled over the countries of the old world. Under present conditions the importing coun tries are powerless to buy rrom me I'nlted Htatea. Export business ia at a complete standstill and no one dares to undertake to do any trading with for elcners now as the lnsuranoe rates In the way of war rinks are prohibitive, and while many millions of bushels ot wnegi have been sold to go abroad, the markets ere paralysed gixl terminal points win or piled hlKh with wheat that has been amid to go there. The crop situation has again become the main Issue in the corn market and the weather map Is bound to come In for more attention this week than It received last. Foreign affairs and the sensational action of wheat turned traders away from the ordinary market Influences, but the bullish advices of Saturday could not be ignored. A decline of thirty points In Oklahoma and sixteen points In Missouri conditions during July, has given me trade something to think about, and It la believed generally that the next govern ment reiKirt will show a general decline of ten points for the month. Oats traders feel uncertain a to the course of the market during tha week because of the unsettled condition In Europe and prospects of the railroad strike, The country finds existing values satisfactory and Is selling oats freely. All other Influences In tha provlelona market la overshadowed by the war care. It Is certain that the market will be confined to narrow llmlta until aome thlnir definite Is learned regarding the foreign situation. The product appears to be on a healthy domestio basis as tar as the meats are concerned and lard la still waiting for the late summer and fall demand. Wheat was IH2c lower. In spite ot the warning, receipts of cattle at this and all other markets were very liberal this morning, l&xactly what had been predicted took place. The money market being tight the smaller buyers many of them dropped out of the market entirely on aocount of the re luctance of the banks to extend credits and the big buyers bought very spar ingly. Ke ports rrom all other market points Indicated the aame conditions as existed here, that Is light buying and heavy breaks In values. Even the big packers ware very slow In starting to buy and It was later than usual before the market opened and al most midday before enough business had been transacted to g)ve any correct Idea ot what the market really was. Prices were unevenly lower, ranging all the way f rom lorftKo to as much as 2bo or more lower. The market continued to drag until the close and some cattle were not sold until very late but In the end the most of the receipts changed bands. . Pre 4 44 riOCTH DAKOTA. li seeers 1200 4 14 HOGS Owing to the sharp break at all points the last end of last week, re ceipts were light this morning, only thirty-eight cars or about 2.600 head be ing received. This Is almost 6,ui0 smaller than a week ago and I.eOu short of the corresponding Monday ot last year. The majority of the shippers evidently heeded the warnings that were sent out at the close of laat week, and today's receipts were In a measure shut off Conditions st all points are still about the same, that Is vary uncertain and panicky and the wisest course Is the one advised Friday and Haturday, name ly to be very conservative In the matter of marketing like stock until the situa tion clears up. I'nder the Influence of a sharply lower provision market hog values continued to tumble this morning. JJurlng th early rounds shipper buyers picked up several loads that were quoted as steady to possibly a little stronger but naturally the demand from this quarter was lim ited. Packers were very slow In start ing out. and It was 10:80 before they even made a bid. When first offers were finally made they confirmed ru mor that had been going th rounds all morning, th figures quoted being a flat sou lower than Saturday' prices. Hellers, of course, were not inclined to cut loos at such a sharp reduction without at least putting up a fight, with the result that the forenoon passed with practically nothing sold to the psckeis. Tr.e situation remained the same until s little after noon when salesmen de rided that there was no use In fighting the thing any further, and began to nil loose at price that were little different from the first bids, that is lust about 8v lower. Movement was lifeless - but the few loads here were pretty well cleaned up bv 12.80. Most of the sales were made ground $7.40, soma of the early shipper sales putting an 38.46 top on the market. N. As on most days last week no really good killing lambs were available, but the beat here brought steady prices while th4 less desirable grades had an easier feeling and were the last to sell. Prices ranged all the way from U.36 to $7.96 according to weight Snd quality. About one-half ot the day's receipts con sisted of lambs, the remainder being aged sheep, largely with a good sprink ling of yearlings. . Buyers were more Interested In mutton offerings, and trade In these was fairly active al steady to strong prices. WILL GRANT NO MORE PERMITS Leglelatare Mill Re Asked ta Pass . Law ta F.nennraste Tkelr Use , as Reservoir and Game Preserves. iFtom a Staff Correspondent.) DE9 MOINES, la., Aug. $.-(Speclal.-That a complete change of the attitude ( of the stats toward the remaining lakes el' Iowa la ahead Is now Certain. It has been forced upon the people by the few very dry seasons that have prevslled nd by the completeness with which drainage has been accomplished In the ' northern part of the state. ' The present state administration ha ' been especially considerate of the lake question. The control ot the lakes :s In the hands of the executive council. The present executive council has not ordered the drainage of a single lake where there has been the slightest op position or any Indication nt protest. One little lake In northern Ija-a. which wus but a marshy pond, was ordered drained snd the land sold; but It was the tiuanl- moua opinion ot all persona that It was . worthless as a lake. The council In n- ' dertaklng to carry out the orders of a- previous council let a contract to com- ' plete the drainage ot one lske, and there was gtich a protest that the council can- eeled the contract. But there seems. : to be no way of rescinding tho revlous order snd the lake has already been partially drained. The council provided for a considerable fund to aid In -dredg-' Ing another lake and as to several where", efforts have been mad to secure drain- ', age the council hsa refused to act. , The fact is, that It Is the belief of 4he present state administration that under no circumstances should there ve any more drainage of any ot the lakes that may, by any possibility, be made use of as lakes, or that might be Talu- able for aame preserves or that could .. be of serTice as reeerrolrs for water to aid In staving off tha drouth. Un doubtedly a strong recommendation to the; legislature wilt be mad alone this line. Organise for Proklklllan Werrk. ' 1 The various associations la the state ' Interested In temperance work have been , very aotlv lately and are engaged in . organising looal associations to carry on the work. In the oast there ha been little attention PI4 to thl work in the dry counties of the state; but with the enforcement of the Wbb-Kenyon federal law, which make It easier to enforce :' prohibition, organisations are formed to , see to it that there Is no violation of the state laws. At Manchester In Delaware county, there has Just been formed a strong tempergna organisation with cap ital stock .of $8,000, prepared to fight the Illegal ssle of boose. It comprises a number ot the leaning business men or the town and county. The plan of In corporating these association and rals Ing a fund with which to do business seems to be highly la favor, and It I found to be effeotlv-. ' reet af File In Iowa. ' Information as to a remarkable situs- , tlon with regard to a fly pest In south- , eastern Iowa has reached here. It seem there has been an Invasion of great swarms ot the Mormon fly at Burlington . and Fort Madison and elsewhere. They arrived In an Immense swarm , at Burlington, but died very quickly.,' Th merchant were compelled practically to close their store whil the file were at their worst But la'er th area teat danger came upon the city by reason of th decaying heap of Insect. Th street department In . Burlington awept . up and hauled away sixteen wagon loads of the Insects, but thl represent but a small part of th whole and th decay. Ing Insects cause great annoyanca. Report frees drain -ieids. Report from the field of outhm Iowa, where much ot th threshing of small grain has been done, are decidedly encouraging for good times In Iowa the next year. A sample of what th fields have been doing I reported from Jeffer- . son county, where a record was secured' from fifty-four thrashing. From these! It was computed that ths average yield of rye, on the farm reported, was twenty one bushels te the aore; th average yield of wheat per acre was thirty and one. fourth bushel; the avers g yield of oats per acre was forty-flv bushel. These are unusually high yield in Iowa and Indicate that tho crop thl year will Je above th average la quantity. Th quality I also ald to be very good. One field of oat tlirehe4 out over seventy'' bushels to th acre and gome of ; the wheat field went aa high aa thirty bush els to th acre. SHENANDOAH FAMILY MAROONED IN EUROPE, 8HBNANDOAH, la., Au.
