Tho lowly Kaws, Instilled with a great
Ambition to do something heroic for their
hom'o vlllago, put on a terrific burst of
what Dick Cooler calls speed In yester
day's combat with tho Itourkes, with the
disagreeable and dlstastoful result that
Omaha was licked Into a state of sub
mission which closely resembled that of
coma. There Is no question about It, the
Kaws were entirely too previous end
prominent In Saturday's battle and their
Impolite conduct calls for two wallopings
today, and Johnny Gonding declares that
the said wallopings will bo forthcoming
Beforo the Kaws got through shattering
the pleasant dreams of Messrs. Tipple.
Grover and Slagle eleven runs had been
counted, while all Omaha could do was
five.
Daniel Tipple, tho well-known pulchri
tudlnous athlete, was tho Initial victim
of the Kaws' homicide. Daniel's hand
some countonanco was twisted most hor
ribly In tho opening round and he was
forced to hie himself to tho club house
to apply first aid to the Injured. Bert
Grover, who Is quite belligerent and pugi
listic at times, was sent to the mound to
trim a few of the bellicose Kaws. Bert
had bum luck, probably due to tack of
training, as "ho was not In the pink of
condition as Is necessary when assuming1
the burden of avenging a felloe athlete's
defeat Bert was battered from sight In
the sixth and Walter Slagle was called
upon to obllgo. Walter did very nicely,
but got himself In bad by refusing to
allow a Kaw to get a hit In the ninth.
That Inning alone ruined the record the
Kaws had been compiling. The Kaws
made a hit In every stanza except the
ninth.
Dnohner Refuses lilts.
In the Interim a port-sided gent by the
handle of Dashner was having the time
of his young life. Mr. Dashner, who has
an exalted Idea of his own cleverness and
cunning as a comedian, was dispensing
funny stuff by the yard while he kept
the hits scattered. Occasionally Mr.
Dashner forgot to pay attention to the
batters, so enamored was he In getting
his comedy over the footlights, and he
permitted a quintet of runs.
Among other Kaws dispensing the
laughs was Mr. Relslgl, who was pum
meled In Friday's fray. Mr. Relslgl wad

PHILADELPHIA, July 18.-I'oor field
ing nnd costly bases un balls aided In
giving Philadelphia two victories over
Chicago today, 4 to 1 and G to 1. The
first game was decided through Phila
delphia scoring three runs In the sixth
Inning on two bases on balls, two hits
and an error by Bodle. In tho same In
ning the home team was credited with
a unique double play. With one out and
J. Collins on first, Fournler knocked a
high fly back of first base. McInneB
could merely touch tho ball. J. Collins
hesitated, to run on tho fly and Four
nler ran past him, thereby automatically
putting himself out, and Mclnnls' thiow
to 15. Collins retired J. Collins between
first and second.
Both Clcotte and Bender plt:hed fino
ball In the second game, but CntC'igj
piled up errors lr tho fl.-t Inning and
gave Philadelphia a lead, which tho
visitors could not overcome. Score, stc

CINCINNATI, July lS.-Claronce QriN
fin of San Francisco today won ths clay

Ella Fottrcll, also of San Francisco, but
It was by tho closest possible margin.
Tho match went flvo sets, threo of which
wero hard fought, and In which some ot
the prettiest exhibitions of tennis skill
over seen here was shown.
Endurance proved the victor In the
match, for nt ono tlmo Kottrell was
within n single point of annexing the
honor. The scores were, 3-6, 6-8, 8-6, 6-0,
6-2. Fottrell hud his man at his mercy
during the first set. Tho steady, careful
game for which Griffin Is noted, proved
1 successful In tho long run, however, for
after the first set, the points began to
1 grow on tho side of Griffin. Whllo he
t lost the second set by a close margin, yet
j his steady drives along the lines began
j to tell on tho fast tiring Fottrcll In tho
i third set. It was at this point that the
. climax of u remarkable situation was
reached.

Fottrell annexed the first threo games

handily, Fottrcll gathered In the sixth,
nnd arlfflth came back strong, winning
the seventh and eighth and making the
scoro four all. Fottrell took tho ninth
and Griffith tho tenth.
Then Fottrell took tho eleventh and took
tho first three points In the twelfth,
thereby being within ono point ot th
championship. Hero, however. Griffin,
rallied, deuced tho gnme nnd then won it,
multlng the games 6-G on tho set Fottrell
hud been noticed to falter.
ills drives lacked tho forco that hod
characterized them during tho earlier
games and after two hard fought games
Griffin won out and won his first set.
By this time Fottrell was almost tn a
state of complete exhaustion and It re
quired a ten minutes' rest before he waa
able to resumo play.

When ho did his efforts were almost
pitiful. What had heretofore been drives
developed Into short chops and his re
turns wore of tho weakest, Griffin, gain
ing confidence nt every stroke, ran out
tho set, C-0, allowing Fottrell only a few
scattered points during the entire set. Is
the fifth and final set Griffin took th
first three games easily, but Fottrell
braced, getting back to something like
hli old form and by tremedous effort iron
the fourth and fifth games. This, how-i
ever, used up all ot his reserve endurance,
and the remainder of the match was easy
for Griffin, he winning the next threta
