THE BKE: GRAIN AND PRODUCE MARKET Bears in Wheat Pit Enjoy Some Smooth Sailing. CORN IS QUITE IRREGULAR Yellow Cerr.nl In t'p nnd Ilorrn and After Shorting Considerable Unrly StrcnKth Weak ens Later On. OMAHA. July 14, 1914. Smooth sailing was the lot of the bears In the wheat pit yesterday There were not enough bulls with the necessary back bone to halt the onward march of the be lievers In lower tirlces. Some of the cash handlers of wheat, who sent out bids for tno grain late Saturday, reported the ac-c-ptancca on bids as light, yet there were others in the trado who claimed that tho country was a heavy seller. The best criterion was tho big sales In the way of 'hedges," and they certainly were large. When asked as to the cause of the weakness shown In wheat, aa well as the fact that the bulls were unable to stem the tide, "Jack" O'Brien, one of the traders of the Bartlett Frailer house, answered that the weakness was the actual wheat coming on sale. When it Is considered that tho now crop of Whent has only begun to move out of the hands of farmers nnd that It Is being prepured for shipment with all the haste possible. It behooves the trade at large to move with the greatest cau tion In making large commitments on the bull side of the market. Todd W. Lewis of the firm of Charles E. Lewis A Co. of Minneapolis, now In the wheat fields, found rust In the neigh borhood of Aberdeen, and that velvet chaff wheat was more Infested than tho blue stem. Crop news was the lending bear help In whont. and this was followod closely by the goodly lncreaso In tho visible supply. Corn was Irregular and unsettlod. It showed considerable strength enrly, but weakenrnl later. The early buying was on continued reports of deterioration, caused by hot winds and lack of mois ture. Cash sales of corn here wore small at only 40.100 bu. The oats market was In a demoralised condition for a period yesterday, but rallied on some outside buying And tuled quite steady during the latter part of the sossion, Further progress in the upward direc tion was noted In tho provision trade yesterday, prices closing with substan tial gains. An Improved demand for cash meats was reported, and the trade anticipated some betterment in the lard trado within the near future. Wheat was unchanged to He lower. Corn was unchanged to lo higher. Oats were VSOHo lower. Clearances were 6,000 bushels of corn, 3,000 bushels of oats and wheat and flour equal to 272,000 bushels Liverpool closed HtHld lower on wheat and IkiHd higher on corn. In provisions th outcome varied from VqIWc decline to a rise of 15c Wheat speculators found plenty of signs that the demands of importing countries hnd been well filled, at least for the present. The few bids which were re ceived from across the Atlantic- proved to be quite unsatisfactory aa a working basis. About the only buying of any Im portance on foreign account was In tho September delivery and was believed by most traders to be simply the filling of old contracts. The European visible sup ply exhibited u substantial' Increase, whereas there was a big falling off at the corresponding time a year ago. Reports of black rust damage to wheat In South Dakota were more numerous and positive than heretofore. The news about the plague, however, was not backed up by any rush to purchase or by other evi dence of widening alarm. Corn values dropped owing to breaking of tho drouth In parts of the Ohio valley and because of a forecast of unsettled conditions tonight and tomorrow promis ing wldeaprad rain, Merchandise demand was slow, es pecially from the east, Damage reports from Texas and Oklahoma and southern states east of the Mississippi had no last ing effect on the market. "Holiday. CATTLB-Reeolpts were very light again this morning, only 67 cars all told be.ng reported In the yards. This leavos tint tun for the two days at 2,176, thrt rtmallest of any similar period for months back, mid only about halt us largo as a year ago. In oilier words, there were hardly enough cattle in the yards to really in 11k o a market. Still buyors wanted tne cuttle and they bought pretty muoh every thing In sight by 9 o'clock In the morn ing, The prices paid were a little stronger than yesterday, In fact, tho mar ket has been steadily creeping upward lnr somn tlavs back. The best cattle In the yards, both heuvy and light, sold ,aa high as 83.75. That la the highest prico paid on this market thus far this year. Cows and heifers were extremely scarce und they, too. commanded good strong prices. There wero only a few scattering lots of stackers and feeders In sight. Thero l a foaling among stockmen that prices on beef cattle nro so high that anything like liberal reoelpts at tha dif ferent market points could hardly fall to bring about a reaction. However, the sup. ply of cornfed cattle Is so light In the country that a good many are not look ing lor enough cattlo from that souroe to cause any very serious or long-continued toact.on In prices. On the other hand it Is pretty well understood that range men have been watching ' the ad Vance In cattle very closely and that they wll undoubtedly make an effort to run in a few graseers at an early date-It re. mains to be seen how long It will be before tho range can supply enough oat tie to break tho market. Ml 7 00 HOOS-For the first time In a week t fairly liberal supply showed un. some thing like 183 ears or 11,000 head being reported In. For the two days the re ceipts total 15,824 head, being close to 6.0CO larger than last week, and almost 2,000 heavier than for tho same days last year. With a generous run In slarht. and re, ports of breaks at other points, the local trad opened rather slow this mnralnr. Packers' early bids on all exoopt the best hogs wore close to a dim lower, During th first rounds shippers and speculators were rather qulot, but ther was a fair demand from this auartar. and before long th snippets, oa well as one or two of tho killers, were buy Ins beet bogs at figure that were not ever a nickel lower, and In a row In stance looked almost steady. The com moner kinds did not fare so well, how ever, and In spite of the efforts of th salesmen to hold values up bid failed ta show much Improvement over the early offers, so that when the big end of the offerings started to move, value were In the majority of cose (gtiao lower than yesterday's average. Th general trade Is close to 510c lower, although th light decline on best kinds will bolster the average up a bit Uulk of the sales was made at 8A504f.6O, and quit a sprinkling sold on un to 18.70. with a top of, 88.75, Jut a nickel below yesterday's high money. The longest string landed at 33.56. with, ot course, a few scattering load the roghor kinds on down below 18.60, The big end of the supply was cleaned up in pretty fair season. After th other stuff had been cleaned up, however, thero were still quit a number of load of common, rough, mixed and heavy hog In first hands. Packer wer very bearish on tho common kind all morning, and, a was tha cose on Monday, some of the hog still unsold at noon had not even attracted a bid. There were around ten loads scattered through the yards at midday which salesmen re fused to cash ot th figures that they were offered, and 0110 or two seller re. ported that they had hogs which packer refused to even look at. In sheep or lambs, still, whllo trade was active nnd tho clearance seasonable, price seemed to have an easier tendency, Traders did not agree ns to which way the market tended this morning, as some thought values were strong and others considered them weak and possibly a shade lower In some Instances, The dif ference of opinion on prices was due to the difference as to quality ot the offer ings, However, as was the case yester day there whs not enough good killers to go around among tho packer buyers, on account of the moderate run as com pared with a week ago nnd two weeks' ago.
