CLOSMAN POUNDED FROM BOX

SlanliiRT Visitors.
A arge gathering of lady fans flocked
to the ball yard yesterday to lamp Pa's
demon athletes distinguish thcniKcIves
against the faltering Wlches. But the
AVIches failed to falter and the lady fans
wore forced to return home from the
aforo mentioned ball yard In a more or
less dlscusted tone of voice. The only
commendablo thing about the alleged
combat was the brevity of duration. It
only lasted ono hour and forty minutes.
If It had lasted two hours, like most
Tlourkc park battles the lady fans would
have had to be carried away in ambu
lances. After several minutes of expert
calmulation the score was found to be 11
to 3, In favor of Wichita.
Bull Durham, the well known exponent
of the ball with nothing on It, was in
the box fortified by a prayer and a glove,
either of those standard commodities was
needed as Mr. Durham had no difficulty
In pitching the pill where the Boourko
athletes didn't like It. Mr. Durham Is
a decipie of Mr. harlcs Lincoln Herzog.
According to Mr. Charles, Lincoln Herzog
the proper method of copping ball games
is AVhen you get a guy down choko him
to doath." Following oxpllclty this little
bit of strategy Mr. Durham did the cruel
choke deed without the slightest compunc
tion. He gave the Ttourkes but five
stingy Utile hits and four of them arrived
In the ninth round when the Rourkcs
were plainly In distress. ,
New Untpa Appears.
Aside from the fact that the home
athletes wero unable to hit 'em where
they ain't, the battle was featured by
numerous things. First a new gent ap
peared as an umpire. As he wore the
regulation mask and breast protector and
called the words "strikes and bolls" with
wreckless Irregularity and without re
gard to tho pitching It Is assumed he is
n regular umps. His name Is McCuliough,
and ho parts his hair in the middle.
Another feature was Mh. Nicholson.
Mr, Nicholson was possessed with the
winged hoofs and winged cane of the
legendary Mercury, and he made a cou
ple of running catches In loft that brought
tears of grief to a couple of our athletes.
Patsy O'Rourke was still another feat
ure Pnfsv tnnk n nnrtlmilnr friendship
Delight in pouncing on me pin. n
knocked four blows and was safe the
fifth trip on an error by Graham, which
isn't so worse for a Louisville casteoff.
Jco Bills, late of this city and a well
known pharmacist, knocked three hits
and muffed one fly.
Ebson Closman essayed to start tho
heaving for tho Rourkes, but Ebson dis
covered after the second Inning that he
was wanted elsewhere. Eleewhero ho
went, and Walter Slagle was thrust Into
view. Walter remained In view the rest
of the game, but he was not as conspicu
ous as the Wichita bludgeons, and he
was greeted by several hits nnd runs nt
various times during the remainder of the
combat
rtonrkm Score In Lout Stnnsn,
Only in the ninth Inning did the Bourkes
perform creditably. For six Innings not
k hit was registered and Bunk Congalton
alone saw tho sight of first base by vir
tue of a pass. In tho seventh Fred
Thomas beat out an Infield hit and that
was all until tho ninth when Thomason
opened with a hit, Graham popped, but
Krug and Thomas delivered singles und
Congalton poked a double. Tills netted
three runs with the assistance of a saeol
flee fly by Krueger.
Today the same teams wilt battle. The
game will bo called at 3 o'clock. Score:
