weather conditions.
Charles Sherman, vice president of the
Happy Hollow club, with T. W. Carpen
ter, drove off the first tec at 6:. this
morning, leading the list of 214 entries In
the first day of play.
In rapid succenston, the pairs at Inter-
vajn of two minutes, got away from tho
ten before a gallery which surpassed any
which has witnessed the opening of a
stato golf tournament In Omaha.
Appuuss was given In liberal quantities
for tho excellent drives, whllo the gallery
sympathetically groaned when the players
dubbed their drives up the hill to the
first green.
The Happy Hollow club course was
never In moro perfect condition, nnd
Charles Johnson, professional, who has
gambled with the weather man during1
tho last month, camo off victor, when
excellent showers fell following tho last
mowing of the fair green.

Tho Happy Hollow club led the entry
list with 105, while tho Field club was
second with fifty-seven men on the entry
list. The Country club has fifteen men
in the tournament; Miller Park club,
twelve; Lincoln Country club, eleven;
Seymour Lako club, eight; Fremont Coun
try club, three, and tho Council Bluffs
Bowing association, three.
IV. D. Clarke, provisional, at the Field
club, and George Simpson, professional,
at the Country club, had charge of the
scoring, white Charles Johnston, profes
sional, at the Happy Hollow club, with
C. 13. Beed, secretary of the Nebraska
Golf association, were In charge of tho
pairings at the first tee.

The Country club leads the Field olub
In tho team play by a score of 338 to 843,
at the end of tho first eighteen holes,
while the Happy Hollow club team and
others trailed a dozen or moro points be
hind. Three of the clubs have entered teams
lu the team contests, which -will be de
cided by the qualifying medal scores.

generally looked upon as the favorite of

fact that Jack Hughes of the Field club
and the present state champion Is play
ing In the tourney.
Tho Happy Hollow club course, one of
the most difficult in the west, seems to
have a Jinx on the players In the quali
fying round. Frank Halo of the Field
club returned tho first really fair score
of the day, with 87. He was followed In
the next pair by E. M. MorBman of the
Country club, who also made an S7 for
the first 18 holes of the tournament
Then camo C. H. Rogers cat the Miller
Park club with an 87 and Karl Boch of
the Field club with the tame score.
