are better nnd more powerful. There
are regions In the corn belt, where now
the farm teams are heavy and good, but
take It aB one finds It throughout most
ot the farming states of America, the
farms are underpowered. In many In
stances they have not enough horses; In
more Instances the horses are not good
enough.
Labor Is today the dearest thing about
the American farm. We must study to
make the labor most efficient. One em
ploys a laborer for 11.60 a day. Few men
realize that this Is capitalizing that lab
orer at more than 38,000, but It Is true,
as a little work with figures, allowing
Interest at 6 per cent, will Bhow. It Is
obviously a poor business policy to equip
the 3S.O0O man with a 1200 team. He must
be made as effective as possible In his
labor1, and that means that he ought to
have at least three big strong horses to

Healthy Anvnl Officer Discovered
to He Typhoid Germ
Carrier.
The Navy department Is struggling with
a problem as to the disposition that
should be made of an officers who Is
said to be a typhoid germ carrier. He Is
apparently In the best of health and has
an excellent record, but examination by
medical officers Indicates that his asso
ciation with officers In the service has
developed a number of typhoid cases,
these following his asslgncment to duty
at a station on a ship.
The medical officers took every pre
caution for the sanitation of the Bhlp upon
which the officer was servlng,.and could
find no source In which typhoid could
originate. Finally, upon examination of
the officer tn question It was shown that
he was Infected with typhoid germs. He
Is now taking treatment from specialists
In New York with the hope that the
germs can be expelled from his system.
If he Is not cured the department may
be compelled tq retire htm, although he
la otherwise fit for duty. Washington
