MOST SCIENTIFIC EVER DEVISED Expedition Experts to March RlRh tern Hundred Mile nnd Mnt Chttt All lln flrni German Writer Says Diedrichs Was Sent to Grab Them. M'KINLEY WIRES TO SAMPSON American Told Illm Prenldcnt Sent MrDK( "Don't Itlik it Slnttlr. Hhlpl 1Vnr rrlth f.rrmnny la Imminent. A writer who uses the pseudonym of Carolus Adolphus, and who Is understood J trt tin n fnrmr nrnmlnnt illnlnmiLl. dp I dares that thti despatch wax sent, fol lowing closely on the Dewcy-Dlcdrlchs i dispute at Manila. The statement In ' made In a book entitled, ''Julchcn In the j Land of Liberty." which consists of a ; series of letters describing a trip to i America. One of these letters describes ' the Manila Incident, and continues; "The. uuMtlon Is. what did our dlnlo- be thirty-six 'mats have In mind In sending a fleet? If It had tcen merely a matter of protect ing Germans' life and property, an ar- t mored skiff would have been Sufficient j The truth Is, however, that we really In- j tended to grab the Philippines If possible, since we were badly Informed and be- lleved that Americans did not want them. Thin mistake of ours was strengthened by the then ambassador In Dertln, Mr. Andrew White. He Is believe1 to have held the opinion that by occupying the Philippines tho United Slntes would sim ply be thrusting a fishhook Into Its own skin and he was not so far wrong find he expressed this opinion, howbelt quite unofficially, in Wllhelmstrasso, although he later denied officially that he had snld anything of the kind. "In any event, the sending of our fleet to tho Philippines provoked great dis pleasure In America, especially slnco Washington knew of our plans, I re cently made tho acquaintance of an 1 American officer who had been tho ad- I jutant of the conmander-ln-chlcf In tho j Cuban campaign. This officer, who 1 spoke excellent German, told me that ha i still had a copy of a telegram from the I then President McKlnley direct to the j commanding admiral In Cuban watcrn, which read: 'Don't risk a single ship; ' war with Germany Imminent.' ' "This Is an absolute fact, and t- rls torlans can tako official notice of It " LONDON, July 4.-AU the provisions HKP.L1N, July l.-DId President Mc for Sir Ernest Shackleton's trip across Klnley cable to Admiral Sampson during the South Polar continent are to bo packed j It war with Spain: "Don't risk a single I Jlhlll' wnr urllti n.rmflnv Imminent? " . 1 . 1 I r l. . . . m .Vim m rmt I ' J nutritious part of tho composition,'' says Sir Ernest. "We tried them In Norway, but did not succeed. We shall no doubt do better at the South Pole when we are more hungry." The menu prepared for the party Is not an enticing one. It has been decided upon, however, under the advlre of tho Royal Army Medical college nnd Is made up of food that Is csry to transport and at tho me time will keep the body warm ana strong. The rations will ounces a day, cpmpared with the average of three pounds n day eaten by the ordi nary person. . In the Utter there Is a lot of waste which haa been eliminated from the rations of the explorers. There will be daylight during the whole five months the party Is on the march, no the ordinary day of twenty-four hours "will be disregarded nnd a new day of nineteen hours established. Supposing the hour for rising on the first day Is 7 o' lock, the lime table will work out on theso lints: 7 to 8 A. M. Preparations for the start nnd breakfast, consisting' of three ounces of lard per man, two ounces of sugar, one ounce of dried milk, wheat protein and oats. 8 to 12 M. March. i: to 1 P. M. Itest and lunch, consisting of nut food, composed of Brazils, almonds end beech nuts, mixed with oil, dried ivllk and oats. to 5 T. M. March. 2 to 7 P. M- Pitch camp, rest nnd take dinner, consisting of the same food In the same quantity as breakfast. ; T. M- to 2 A. M.-Bleep. The same round of nlnefecn hours will then bo repeated. Ilnflnn nn Annlynrd. Sir Ernest explains that the lnrd and Aiigar supply heat, tho protein builds up muscle, tho nuts are the most nourishing food In tho world and the oats, mixed with other rations, afford tho bulk neces sary to keep tho organs from becoming Atrophied. "You may feel rather sick when you lesr of It," said Sir Krnest, "It's rather ft, greasy compound. Indeed when wc tried It In Norway wo thought It a very unpleasant sort of ration, but 1 can assure you that, scientifically considered, it Is the finest that has ever been devised. I nope that this tlmo hunger wilt play a very email part In our ttoutles." As the party Intends to cut right across the continent, a march of 1.800 miles, they wlll have to carry nil their food with them, and cannot llko previous explorers, Whose objective was the Pole, depend upon food depots on the return march. (Therefore the greatest attention Is being paid to provisions. The organisation Is perfect? so far us human Ingenuity can devise. They are allowing fifteen days food for bllszards, but they can go on much shorter rations If necessary. To carry the food motor sledges with aerial propellers will be used for the first time, and In addition there will be 100 Canadian docs, which can carry 100 pounds each. Ilnoda Instead of Tents. For protection while sleeping a sleeping hood, something After the fashion of an automobile hood, is to I used. This weighs thirty-seven pounds and accom modates six men, whereas the old tents TOllhed thirty pounds and accommodated three people.' The first 800 miles of the Journey will fcs Across land, never betqr covered by man, And It Is here that the chief dif ficulties are looked for. With tho last .800 miles Blr Ernest Is fairly familiar. bavins crossed and rccrossed It on his trip to the Pole. The two ships .for the expedition, one to take his party out to the Weddell sea, and the other to bring them home from the other side of the continent, the Aurora and the Endurance, nre now getting ready for their voyages. Tho latter Is In London and the former In Jsew Zealand. fl Vigorous Onslaught on Prices in All Dcpts. The campaign Cor an Alliance, between Norway and Hwe den continues without'' a dlsscntln note. 1'romlnenl politicians of All parties are Advocating such a course on the public platforms And In the newspapers. The 1 movement, however, still lacks any offi cial action. 1 Sven Iledln, the Swedish explorer, and filguld Isben have exchanged visits be tween Stockholm and Chrlstlanla, and vach has found publio sentiment nKree able to the proposed alliance. The Ir reconcilable differences which led to tlm disruption of the union between tho two countries ln-lK And which barely es-(.-aped causing war seem to have smoothed out to the extent at least that both peo ples desire td unite In a defensive alllanco Against possible Russian aggression. The Increase In tho army and navy of Sweden, Instead of cxcltlnir the concern of Norway, Is greeted there with the ut most satisfaction. It Is said, and Norway Itself has a strong movement under way for an Increase In armaments, laoen. In his lectures here, has argued that the two foreign offices and the general staffs ehould have, some formal arrnngement for working together In case of war. MOULIN, July 4. An astonishing coin-1 mcntary upon tho conditions In the Ger man theatrical world has been Jurnlshed by a libel suit at Munich, Krnst Hchrumpf, director of the Munich Folk' theater, brought action against the publisher of a magazine dovotod to stngo affairs, who had accused Hclirumpt of mistreatment of his employes. The testi mony at the trial disclosed conditions which moved the presiding Judgo to de clare that "we have experienced a great deal In this court room, but novor bo- fore such testimony as this process has brought to light. Tho poorest working- men are better off than these actors. Worklngmen would not endure such treat- mcnt." Uncontradicted testimony showed that Bchrumpf was accustomed to strike and kick actors and to lash thorn with a whip; that actresses were engaged at a salary of )1S to $22.60 monthly and re-1 quired to furnish their own wardrobes. although the theater wns oxtrcmely profitable and Schrumpf had become rich through its management; tlmt the di rector had declared In the presence of tho whole company that "It Is a pity wo aro not In Itussls, so I could walk Into you wmi a Knout;- mat ne had struck a woman. prompter In In the face with a bunch of keys (Gorman keys are so big and heavy that a bunch of them Is al most a deadly weapon). The testimony concerning the plaintiffs conduct toward the women of his company was of such a nature that tho publio was excluded from the court room while It was being given. The publisher of the offending nrtlclo was acquitted and tho entire costs were placed upon Schrumpf. lie will alio lose his concession as theater manager. The abused actors declared that they submitted to such treatment becauso they were, tinder prevailing conditions In their profession, helpless o resist. Moreover, they said, there was no feeling of sol idarity among actors which would mako resistance effective. It was a question of bare existence with them and they bore Ills they had rather than flee to others which might be worse. ANTI-VACCINrYTIONISTS LOSE STRONGEST ARGUMENT BEIIUN. July t The antl-Tacclnatlon-Ists are about to lose their strongest Argu ment. Their most telling objection Against vaccination haa long been that It was Im possible to get absolutely pure vaccina matter; notwithstanding the greatest pre cautions, like the use of calves kept under specially sanitary conditions, the lymph obtained would not infrequently contain deleterious germs. According to the Ger man Medical Weekly, however, a way has At last been found for sterilising lymph so thoroughly that Its purity can always tie relied upon. This has been accom plished by Prof. C Frledberger And Dr. K Mlronescu, who have availed them selves of tho well known principle that the ultra-violet rays of light are destruc tive of bacterial life. The virus Is put into small tubes of quarts-glass, which are then exposed to the ultra-violet rays irom an eitcinc lamp, in twenty or thirty minutes there Is not a live germ left in them. Air and Submarine Craft Making Large - Warships Obsolete i IlDnUN, JITI,Y 4.-A view recontly ex- j pressed by the British admiral, Sir Percy ficott, that the development of sub-1 marines and hydroplanes made dread-' noughts and largo cruisers obsolete has caused much discussion In German naval circles. Ho far as their public utterances go, German navnl experts unanimously reject .Admiral Hcott's view. Th German Fleet society has pro nounced Itself decidedly against It, and now Admiral von Breuslng has published an article taking tho same position. He milium inni mo uuumnrino nas recently made great progress and now exceeds the hopes that were at first held for it; and he also admits that the means of pro tection against tho submarine had not been developed at an equal pace. Never theless the submarine's range of activity Is a limited one. Even If It should put , the dreadnoughts out of commission In ) shore-waters. th latter would still bc'i needed for operations on tho high seas, whero as yet, nobody expects that tho' suDinanno can venture owing to Its con Mant need to replenish supplies. I LARGER PER CENT OF FARM LADS FITFOR ARMY DUTY ItRRMN. July 4.-Of evory 100 persons subject to military duty In Germany, 58.9 per cent of the farmer lads are fit for service, against S1.9 per cent In Berlin proper, which shows the smallest percent age of able-bodied youths of any place In the empire. The statistics, which are for the year 1912. have Just been made i public Wllmersdorf, one of the Greater Berlin municipalities, which has the low est death rate pf jiny city of Germany, furnishes 48.S recruits for servlee among every 100 men examined, a figure exceed- j Ing that of any other large city In the country.
