ROURKES WIN FROM JOSIES Styles Holds Josies Down, While ' Duffy Loses Grip on Locals. "BILL" STARTS BALL ROLLING Schlpke Ope.ns the Winning Event wltli a lilt Which In Followed by n Hunch of Ilium on the Pnrt of Pn'n Plnyer. Mr. Duffy, who twirled asalnst the Rourkes last spring on tho coldest day of the year when the Pittsburgh Pirates were hero to show how easy it Is to beat a minor league club, essayed to toll against the same Rourkes yesterday afternoon only In a St. Joseph uniform, duo to his transfer of residence. Mr. Duffy did very well when tho Plratea wore behind him, but ho did very much the opposite against the Rourkes. Ho was lambasted from the start and the start was all that ha lasted. He was Jerked after five runs had been made, but the game was safe and tho locals won, 7 to 1 Red Styles, newest addition, was on hand and, while Red didn't have such a great amount of anything In particular, he had enough to trim the Josies. After that juicy lead presented him In the Ini tial stanza he did not exert himself be yond the normal amount and the Josies garnered threo runs and nine hits. Red also got a base hit and struck out twice Just to prove his versatility. After Duffy had been derrlcked a gen tleman whom Umps Pyufe announced as "Pierce" appeared on the hurling mound- As a matter of fact the gentleman's name Is Plercy and may vbe pronounced the way It looks or like Percy, which ever way the fans feel. Plercy didn't do so worse, but he might have done better. so he was yanked In the eighth to let Pettlgrew hit a fly to Krug, Plercy not being strong enough to get one past shortstop. After this change consider able argument occurred as to who would complete the combat. Purcell was will lng to take a chance, but Sterzer thought he could have more fun out of It. Bo Sterzer was given the Job and the .Rourkes made another count for luck. Skipper Bill Schlpke opened tho battle with a hit Dunlop popped to Duffy on an attempted bunt, but Krug's bunt was good and Brltton heaved it Into tho bleachers, enabling Skip to perch on third and Krug on second. Thomason was walked and Fred Thomas delivered a two-bagger which cleared the paths, Congalton's t wo-bagger sent Thomas home and Ward's duplicate sent Congal ton home. Five runs already, so it mat tered not that Crosby and Styles struck out after Mr. Duffy was removed from the scenery. In the third a double, a walk and a single followed by a sacrifice and a sac rifice fly gave the Josies two runs. After this Styles settled down until the ninth. when he allowed ono more. Thomason opened the Omaha half of tho third with a double and Ward's sin gle sent lilm home. All was quiet until the eighth, when Omaha decided to annex one more. Con galton beat out an Infield hit and he and Ward wero both Bafe on Rip Watson's bobble. Crosby lined one through Brlt ton and Conny hurried home. This was all for Omaha, but It was enough. Patterson was walked In the ninth after George Watson whiffed, but Styles then whiffed Brltton. Williams was good for a hit, however, and Patterson took third. Wall soaked one to right and Pat terson counted. Dunlop gobbled Grif fith's attempt and tho series was over. Today Des Moines opens a Berles. The game will bo called at 3 o'clock. Score: OMAHA. AB.
