wise dissertation on the whys ami
wherefores of the great slump In base ball
patronage this year. We are In entire
accord with his view that too much
stresn has been laid on big Incomes for
owners and big salaries for players. The
exigencies of base ball require its com
merclallxatlon, but not to the subordina
tion of the game. It la a sport before it
is business, and that equation must bo
maintained If the game endures. So
must tho Integrity of players and owners.
Both must respect contract rights and
mutual rights aside from those written
on paper. Things certainly cannot go on
with profit to anybody the way they havo
been going. A blab-mouthed egotist, who
was lifted upon his pedestal of pre-eminence
by others, made the statement in
Chicago upon his supposed exit from the
game as a proprietor that, "I started on
a shoestring and am now a millionaire."
Perhaps he is, we don't know, but this
wo know, that Just such men and meth
ods as his have had a lot to do with put
ting base ball on tho blink this year.
Closely allied with tho patronage subject
Just now Is the Federal leaguo question;
In fact, the whole quostlon of organised
base ball. It Is not surprising to us that
rumors are rife of a capitulation on the
part of the National Commission, looking
toward admission of the Federals and
concessions to the American association
and Internationals. Tho disaffection is
spreading too rapidly to be cured by half
way measures; they require drastic rem
edies. The virus is deep-seated. Under
normal conditions, with the sport sido of
the game held above the business ele
ment, our opinion is that thero is ample
room for threo major leagues and, a
Comlskey says, if there is, well and good.
If there is not, time will tell. In the
meantime, again quoting the Old Roman,
while players have a right to do the best
for themselves that they can, they have
no rlstht and will not prosper, subserving
their Interests at tho expense of their
consciences in contract Jumping. A con
tract should mean as much in base ball
as in any other calling, and It It does not,
then woe be to base ball. Let the player
not bo the one to kill tho goose that lays
the golden egg.
Speaking of tho depression of pyschol
jgy, a thing occurred at Rourke park
Wednesday which almost tops President
Wilson's citation as to business. With a

Omaha leads the Western league in
fielding and ranks fourth In hitting, yet
barely keeps out of seventh place ami
seem unable to get above sixth. All of
which simply goes to emphasize the lack
of' pitching power. Give any team, that
leads in fielding, comes fourth In hitting,
ranks up well In base running, a first
class pitching staff, and well, what do
you think will be the result? It Is our
belief that the team is going to give a
Much better account of itself, even though
President Rourke should fall In his effort
to strengthen the box, for he has some
pitching ability that ought to improve
Kith time.
Comlskey's Des Moines recruits, Benz,
Bcott and Faber, make a big trio. Faber
pitched what should have been a no-hlt
rame during the week against the Ath
letlcs, the only hit being a scratch due
to a mWudgment by Blackburn. When
a man pitches no-hlt ball against that
bunch, he may be said to have done some

NEW YORK, June 3). Heavyweight af
fairs will progress rapidly during tho
next few days. With Moron meeting
Johnson, Smith tackling Carpentler and
Jesa WlUard threatening to go abroad
and meet the winners. It is quite possible
that an entirely new situation will de
velop before snow flies again.
It Is seldom that America has to look
toward Europe for new developements
in fistic affairs, but Just at present
England and France seem to have cor
ralled everything of any importance in
tho heavyweight line, it Is apparent that
boxing Is on the vergo of a tremendous
boom In both these countries. For tho
first time In history English promoters
are offering big purses, and In the future
it is probable that many of the best
matches will be decided abroad.
According to the latest reports, an
English syndicate has offered Johnson
J30,000 to meet Sam Langford In October.
Willie Ritchie's share of the spoils for
his bout with Freddie Welsh will total an
even greater amount. It Is expected that
tho Moran-Johnson affair will draw an
enormous gate. Evidently American pro
moters, despite their loud outcries regard
ing tho outrageous demands of the boxers,
will have to loosen their purse strings
still further or else stand asldo and see
all the plums go abroad.
For years past California has seen one
or more championship events decided on
July 4. This tlmo the biggest pugilistic
date of the year will be barren, so far
as San Francisco and Los Angeles are
concerned. All the real stars will be
fighting In some other clime, and the
California promoters will have to be con
tent with minor events.
Whether this condition of affairs will
continue depends on the outcome of the
battles pending In Europe. If the John-eon-Moran
affair proves , a fiasco, as
seems quite probable from this distance,
France may lose much of its enthusiasm
for the sport. And If Gunboat Smith
shatters the French Idol with one of his
overhand rights tho Parisians may never
recover from the shock, for it is Car
pcntler's success that Is the cause of tho
boom that has struck tho French capital.

Intercollegiates
May Change Racing
Course at Ithaca
POUOHKEEPSIE. N. Y June 20.
There Is a plan under way to change the
scene of tho Intercollegiate regatta from
the Hudson course to Cayuga Lake
Ithaca. Tho Cornelllans have said little
about their pet project, but it has been
learned that they hope to see tho change
within the next few years, and for this
reason have failed to follow Columbia's
example of building a permanent boat
house on the Hudson. Columbia will
never consent to the move, as tho Blue
and White training quarters at Crum
Elbow, two miles up tho river, cost
$10,000. Whether Pensylvanla will be won
over to Cornell's side is doubtful also.
The other crews Wisconsin, Syracuse
and Washington row in the intercol
legiate regatta by Invitation only, and
while It Is known that they favor the
scheme, none of them would have any
voice In tho matter.
Charles Halstead Mapes, chairman of
tho Columbia committee on athletics, de
clared that the idea would never become
a reality.
"Of course," ho added, "It would be a
grand thing for Cornell, but aside from
the fact that we have a permanent boat
house at Crum Elbow, there Is the ele
ment of neutral water to bo considered.
Cayuga Lake Is anything but neutral.
The course Is a little better than Pough
heepsle, but the facilities are less con
venient and tho spectators wouldn't have
a chance to see the contests. No, we
will never consent to the change."
