All tho concessions wore taxed to their utmost to strvo the great crowds at the grounds during tho afternoon and even ing. Muny ot the picnickers went to tho grounds In tho morning with their families slnco the stores wero closed all day, nnd there was no good reason for staying away from the picnio grounds when thcro was nothing to do in the hot city. Lunches were taken In baskets and spread on tha wass, both at noon and In the evening. All tho ra:cs had to be run In relays bocnuso the entries wcro so numerous. As soon as a race was called hundreds of applicants flocked to the front and clamored to get Into It. It was so with tho ple-entlns contest- And when tho pins wero placed and the word was given, Just ninety boys plunged their faces into Juloy raspberry pastry.
