12 THE BEE, OMAHA, TUESDAY, MAY 1, 1914. GRAIN AND PRODUCE MARKET Bulls in Wheat Steadily Gaining More Ground. INSPECTORS REPORT LOSSES IteprearnlntlTra of Various Chlcaso Concrrnn All Iteport that In sects Have IlnmnK-rd Wheat In hc Sonlhv OMAHA, May IS. 19H. The bulls In wheat are steadily gaining ffround In that market. The position of tha bears, an well nx the shorts at the close of exchange on Saturday wa any thing but favorable, Insofar as necurlng profit for them. Shorts continued to cover their outstanding obligations and there waa an excellent demaud from In vestors as welL Reports of damaso by hesalan fly continue to pour In upon the trade, and they were vcn of a more bervtstent character than Uiofo of flevcral previous days. The southwestern grain growers seem to bo slow In giving the exact condition of the winter wheat plant, aa the advices received at Chicago and claewhtro wcro quite conflicting In character nad therefore misleading. The best crop exports In the southwest In th Interests of Chicago commission houses have aa ono man reported losses from tho Insects, which now are found Jn rich large numbers In the winter wheat belt The fact that fly waa re ported on Saturday In both Kansas and Nebraska makes tho invasion of this In kect In four states, which Includes tho two mentions above, as well aa Missouri and Illinois. The Insect reports which have been re ceived on the Chicago Hoard of Trade have caused a general re-awakcnlng and shaking up of tho speculative wheat mar ket. Where there was a livek of trarto and where prices wcro weak there is now to be seen activity and strength. The commission houses In the business here believe that while there will bo some deterioration because of Insect Invasion the crop of wheal will more than likely turn out to be a bumper affair. Okla homa 1s placed aa high as 60,000,000 bu. br some of the most knowing grain men of that state, and Kanis is placed at JW,000,000 bu.. with some estlmatea much above those figures. It will b remembered that the Kansas Srospecta deteriorated rapidly last year, ut those in a position to know say that th prospects In that state wcro never batter than they are at present, that the Wheat has commenced to head out in mama of the sou thorn counties, that it Is heading out In Oklahoma, and Texas and .that in a great many Instances' the crop Is vlrtuaUy made, unless caught by un seasonable weather before the harvesters enter the field. With hot weather In Argentina and with the corn now held there more or less damaged by the recent rains, the out look for deliveries on contracts In this aviuntry as well aa In Kuropo from tho grain grown In Argentina is anything but ravorable. May oats have continued to show more Strength than the other futures because of shorts covering from day to day. The Chicago stocks are still decreasing ,and ths visible supply Is growing smaller and smaller. Tho situation In hog products shows rnore strength, Cash meats are selling wore freely, not only to the consumer of the United States, but a speculative de mand has developed and there la also reported a strlnkllng of buying on ex port account. The reduction in tho supply of ribs at Chicago haa cut moro or less of a figure in tha matter of strength. Cash wheat waa unchanged. Cash corn waa unchanged to Ho higher. Casta oats were Uo lower. Liverpool close; Wheat, Md higher; com, Hd to Hd higher. Primary wheat receipts were 630,000 bushels and shipments 9SS.O0O bushels, against receipts of 065,000 bushels and shipments of 407,000 bushels last year. Primary corn receipts wero 414,030 bush els and shipments 405,000 bushels, against receipts of 653.000 bushels and shipments of 342.000 bushels last year. Primary oats receipts wero 738,000 bush els and shipment 71X.00O bushels, against receipts of tSG.000 bushels and shipments f 791,000 bushels last year. CARLOT RECEIPTS. CHICAGO, May 18.-Whoat had a gen rral higher range today, Influenced by lgns that Uesslan fly damage would soon be noticeable in most or tho territory from Ohio to Oklahoma. Under free profit taking by longs, however, the tnarket closed unsettled at Hlrtio net lower to Ho advance. Corn finished He to llcOle down; oats off ttu4c and provisions varying from 7V4o decline to a gain of SHc. Rapid falling off In the domestic visible supply counted In favor of tho wheat bulls. Thore waa aa offset, though, from curtailment of export business and from the fact that Antwerp waa offering to resell United States winter wheat bought rer July shipment by way of the gulf. Larger country offerings led to a sharp tek In the corn market. Reports of clearing weather In Argentina formed an additional element of weakness, De creasing stocks here and at Liverpool, and assertions that parts of tha domestic tf It were too dry, helped to lift values at the outset, but only In a temporary way. Oats, like corn, lost an early ad vance and something besides. Scattering reports that tha crop was deteriorating failed to uphold the market when lonsa attempted to realise on sales. Provisions weakened with com. Th setback followed an upturn due to hog receipts not being so liberal as expected. Chicago future prices: 'Artlglel Open. I Hlh. Low. Close. Yes'y, rWbeatj May.1 July. Totals 2,614 6,035 3,432 CATTLE The market opens out this week with a rather small run, only about 2,300 head or about 1,200 short of a week ago, but the general quality of tho of ferings was pretty much the same as it was last week. Advices from eastern markets were somewhat bearish in tone and largely for this reason local dressed beef men appeared to be In no hurry to fill tholr orders, and early bids were barely steady on the best cattle, and weak to a dime lower on the plain and medium kinds. Movement was slow all morning, but before noon everything had changed hands at prices tnul wefe tcady to a shade lower than the early part of last week. Offerings Included nothing very choice or fancy, the beat beeves on salo bringing $8.65, and the bulk of tho fair to good stock going at $8.1038.40. Activity and strength characterized the trade on cows and heifers. There were only a dozen full loads on sale and packers and local butchers went after them as If they needed them. Prioes were generally strong for deslrablo of ferings und with plenty of competition from feeder buyers the thin stuff that had any quality sold very well, Veal calves, bulls, stags, etc., were In active tequcat and fully steady with last week. In stockers and feeders the trade was lacking In life and snap, and tho trend of values was lower for all but choice lightweights, Tho country Is very busy planting corn at present and this nat urally tends to weaken the demand so that although supplies wero very moder ate today tho undertone to the market was decidedly weaK.
