NBW YORK, May 17.-Thc fourth at:d
mort Important to date of the many In
ternational sports competitions In which
tho experts of the United States and
Kngland meet this year will begin tomor
row with the playing of the English
amateur golt championship tournament
over tho course ot tho Royal St. George's
Gotr club at Sandwich. For this golf
classic of tho old world America has made
tha most representative entry In Its his
tory and the spirit ot seeking new fields
to conquer Is most commendable, since
there was no organized effort lrfthls di
rection, each of the dozen or so American
entrants competing as Individuals.
While the United States holds second
place In number of entries by nations It
cannot be denied that the American squad
Is outclassed numerically if not In qual
ity. In view of tho tlmo and expense
neces&ary to compete and the distance
to lx) covered the American entry is ro
markable, containing, as It does, the best
amateurs ranked by tho United. States
Golt association. According to the asso
ciation handicap list for 191 Jorome I).
Travcrs and Francis Oulmet are rated as
(crutch players, Charles Kvans, Jr., Is
handicap one with Frederick Herrcshotf
and P. W. Whlttcmore at three, while.
Inslce, Hale and Weber are rated at
four. Thla list does not complete the
American entry, but It contains the
names of those who are expected to de
velop the strongest attack on the English
title.
Of the Royal St. George club courts It
need only be stated that It Is considered
or.o of the hardest to negotiate In low
figures In nil Kngland. Bunkers, hazards,
sandpits and rough are scattered with
lavish hand throughout tho course. Tr.o
lay of the holer. Is such that great care
and control Is necessary In playing al
most every stroke. The slightest devia
tion or over play at certain holes results
In trouble In pits or hazards which will
easily double par figures before the
green Is reached. To win tho English
title over this course and from tti- field
of entrants that tee off tomorrow Is a
task to test the golfing ability of tho
world's best players. The vctor will be
entitled to all the honors which will be
bis portion, for the following table Is an
Indication of tho golfing difficulties to be
