Wilson in Address in Honor of Naval
Dead Alludes to Criticism.
WISTFUL NOTE IN HIS VOICE
Want to Srro th Mrxlcnnt Not
Flnht Them, He finys Million
Persons Join Nntlon
hi Tribute.
NEW VoitK. May 12. More than 1,000,
000 persons In New York City Joined the
nation yesterday In memorallilng with
eilmplc dignity the heroism of the nineteen
bluejackets and marines who gave tholr
Uvea at Vera Cms.
As tho Impressive funeral pageant
started on its solemn route lrom the Bat
tery l( the Brooklyn navy yard, It was
as If tho pi. 1(0 of tho city had temporarily
stopped. All business whs suspended and
over the Commercial section of the city
there fell a reverential hush.
In the line of mourners that followed
the artillery caissons bearing the dead
were tho chiefs of state and city govern
ment and many moro distinguished men
of nearly every calling: but every eye In
the throngs turned first to the carriagn
In which President Wilson rode close be
hind tho last funeral car. The president
came from Washington during the night
and was with the procession from tho
tlmo It left the Battery until the end of
the ceremony.
Kin of Dend on Stand.
On the stand with the president at. tho
Brooklyn navy yard were relatives oi tho ,
dead anllors and marines, mothers, sis
ters and wives, but In all the throng of
mourners none seemed more deeply
touched than tho man whose word sent
the lads of the navy to fight for their
country's honor at Vera Crus.
And to the president was left the prlv
llego of voicing tho nation's grief and
the nation's belief that those who died
In tho performance of duty had done for
their country a service not to be meas
ured by their Individual deeds.
"The feeling that Is uppermost,'' he '
said, "is ono of profound grief, and yet
there ts mixed with that grtet a pro
found pride that, .they should havo done
as they did and, If I may say It out of t
my heart, a touch of envy of those who
ver permitted so quietly, so nobly to
do their duty."
"To Serve .Mnnklnil."
The head of the nation looked out over
tho thousands massed about the -coffins
on tho parade ground and his voice shook,
with emotion as he declared his creed:
'Wc havo gone down (o Mexico," ho said,
"to servo mankind If wo can find out a
way. Wo do not wr.t to right tho Mex
icans. Wo want to serve them."
T'tero was a wistful noto In his volco
as ho added:
"I never was under fire, but I fancy
that there aro somo things Just as hard
to do as to go under fire. I fancy that
It Is Just as hard to do your duty when
men are sneering at you as when they
arc shooting at you. When they shoot
at you they can only tako your natural
life; when they sneer nt you they can
wound your heart."
