work and for tho last year has been a
member of tho battery of auditors sent

ways and means for unifying tho system
of accounting, reducing expenses and In
troducing new methods of bookkeeping.
For several months Mr. Charske nnd
his co-workers were at the hcamuartera
here and as a result of their labors .the
payrolls were materially reduced when
a number of heads dropped into the
basket on his recommendations. From
hero he went to the Hnrriman road head
quarters In Portland, Ore., where ho fol
lowed the same course pursued In Omaha.
He was there when called to Omaha to
succeed Anderson.

Opening of Douglas street from Twenty-fourth
street to Twenty-fifth avenue
was discussed by the city commissioners
In committee of the whole and the plan
of assessment was not adopted, but a
hearing was fixed for next Monday at
the Instance of J. E. George and other
property owners who sought a new ad
justment. The assessment as reported covers
Douglas street on both sides from Ninth
street to Thirtieth street, and the as
sessment ranges from U) cents to J10 a
front foot.
Property owners will be asked to ap
pear before the council and voice any
objections they may entertain to the
adoption of tho plan of assessment.
SUIT AGAINST ROAD FOR
WORKING MEN OVERTIME
Suit has been filed by tho United Ktates
against the Rock Island railroad, alleg
ing that the railroad has violated the
safety appliance law-, in requiring two
operators to work for a period of thirteen,
fourteen and eighteen hours In twenty
four. The petition alleges that It. K.
Murphy, an operator at Ileatrice, was
required to work longer than nine hours
on two occasions, In December, 1909. It
