features of the Western league
race so far la the weakness of
the pitching. It didn't need
the exhibition given In Omaha
on Friday afternoon to demon
strate this. Careful scrutiny of Wo av
erages for the season so far will show
this. Denver, leading the league, Topcka
and St. Joseph, all have team batting
averages of above .500, whtlo Omaha, tall
ender. Is batting at a team average of
.282. These abnormal figures can only be
accounted for by the conclusion that the
pitching being done for the Western
league Is poor. Bo far not a pitcher has
shown exceptional quality, the best work
having been registered by Closman of
Omaha, who has twice whitewashed fit.
Joseph, a team that Is made up of slug
gers, 'according to tho dope from the
records. What Is most singular, Is that a
number of the pitchers who are thus
bolng mauled were on the roBter of the
league last season, and were showing up
pretty good all the time. Maybe It Is
due to the fact that the time for prepara
tion before opening the reason was prin
cipally spent Indoors, keeping out of tho
rain and cold, and so tho pitchers have
not got down to regular work as yet,
but whatever the reason, the Tact remains
that unless 'some decided Improvement Is
shown, not many of tho youngsters who
are now twirling out this way will get
a look-in nt the World's Series money rl xt
year.
Frank Chance gives as his opinion that
''the ultimate adjustment of relations be

western American teams go east, bringing
the two sections together for tne first time
this season. Some dope may be upset as
the result. On paper, it looks as It the
American eastern section were the
stronger, and that tho first division
places belong to1 Philadelphia, Washing
ton. Boston and the Yankees, but this
dope may be entirely turned around. In
the National the sectional division Is not
so pronounced, nor, by that same taken,
the fight so interesting.
We hope Jimmy Kane makes a home
run every time he goes to bat all season
long; this wish was expressed In this
column last season, also. But while we
nre throwing up our hats and hollering
for him, let us not forget that he fin
ished last year with a batting average
well under .300, nnd that thirty-nine
Western league players ranked above him
s batters at the end of the season.
The appeal In the Kllllfer case wilt
meet approval all the way along the
line, for the principle tnvolved must be
made very clear before base ball's busi
ness end can get on an even keel. To
leave the owners In their present predic
ament would very likely wreck the busi
ness. Eighty-seven base hits were made In
the Western league on Friday. Which
lacks but one of being an average of
twenty-two to the game or eleven to the
team. Omaha is not the only Western
league team that is In dire need of
Vitchers.
Chief Johnson Is now just about where
he would like to be. By order of the
ccurt he is prevented from playing ball,
and all he has to do Is to sit on the
bench and draw his pay. This ought to
suit him right down to the ground.
Jack Johnson says he would sooner
tie an Iron bait around his neck and jump
Into the Seine than let an American
white hope whip him. Nobody's holding
him.

Maybe It Isn't weak pitching, but a
marvelous lot of hitters that is troubling
the Western.

list of American trapshooters for 1911, up
to May 1, 1914, according to records just
compiled. Nebraska comes thirteenth In
the list of professionals, where George
Maxwell of Hastings stands; and then
drops to forty-fifth, tho niche occupied
by Qeorgo L. Carter of Lincoln. A Penn
sylvania man heads the amateur list, and
the first Nebraska name to appear is E.
W. Vnrner of Adama, who Is No. 52. while
others are scattered along down through
