THE BEE: OMAHA, WEDNESDAY, MAY 6, 1U14. y GRAIN AND PRODUCE MARKET May Wheat is Being Held in a Strong Grip. SHORTS ARE QUITE STRONG llnlU Are Meeting Trlth Lota of Op position h- other Elements of IMt nnd the Gutter Are Well flacked Up. OMAHA, May 5, 1914. May wheat Is held In a strong grip and the shorti In that month will be able, to even up tholr position only by going Into the pit and bidding (or the grain as. wanted. Congestion Is pronounced not only at Chicago but at the smaller mar kets of the country as well, showing that those who sold May wheat In the belief that the run of receipts would be liberal are now placed where they will have plenty of time to regret putting out short lines under conditions which looked rosy, but which have proved ' anything but satisfactory to them. It Is said there Is big open Interest In the May wheat at St. liouls and that shorts thero will have more or less trouble In covering. May wheat sold lOUc above July In the Mound City market yesterday and the cash article there was reported as dull. The longs or bulls In May wheat at Chicago are likely to experience more or less trouble In changing their paper profits Into actual money. . The - shorts are among some of the stronger houses In the trade and they are now making a fight against the bulls and claim their position will grow stronger as the month passes. The fact there were sales here yesterday of 650,000 bushels of wheat to go to store, and purchases of 630,000 bush els to come to Chicago principally from the west and southwest Is a straw re flecting the course of tho combat now waging between the bulls and bears In the wheat market at Chicago. Corn was stronger and prices were VtW ic higher. Cash sales, however were quite small at 45,000 bushels. The princi pal strengthening factor was the news from Argentina, where rains were re ported, and the markets of that country were shargly higher, lHc at Buenos Ayres and 24c at Hosarlo. , There was a small cash Inquiry for oats, only 154.000 bushels changing hands, which caused a prlco recession from the early advance. The strength In the corn market and the advance In hogs at the yards were the sustaining Influences In provisions. A commission house with foreign connec tions led in the buying of lard and ribs and local shorts were conspicuous buy ers of pork. Longs led in the selling. Cash trade was unsatisfactory. Cash wheat was unchanged. Cash ,6orn was unchanged to lc higher. Cash oats were uncnangeu. Clearances: Wheat and flour, 412,000 bu.; corn. 6,000 bu.; oats, 67,000 bu. Other speculative articles all nad a net gain, corn, n"'c; oats. He to ana provisions shade to sc. Interest In all else proved secondary to the great harvest promise ror winter wheat. Rough weather, which may set back spring seeding to a hazardous extent In sections where the work has not been Concluded, brought some support to wheat in - the first part of the session. Tre dlqtlons of wide-spread frost counted for awhile, too. In favor of of the bulls, and so also did higher cables. Fear that there would not be gen erous arrivals of Argentine corn until lato June or In July gave corn prices a strong upward bent throughout the day. Further storms In Argentina and reports .that South American dealers were .endeavoring to buy back corn sold for shipment up to May 20, made shorts here anxious. Improved shipping demand helped cause the oats market to climb. Besides It was estimated that the-, acreage In the leading states had decreased 3.25 per cent. Provisions ranged slightly higher with hogs'and corn. Trade, however, waa the smallest recorded In months. .Closing quotations were ns follows: 74 CO ,R0 72 60 1.20 76 55 76 62 .40 74 68 .60 80 62 .30 66 42 .40 78 64 .60 84 64 .10 STOCKS AND BONUS NEW YORK.
