(From a Staff Correspondent.)
LlNCOIeN, Neb., May 5-(Spcclal.)-The
promised confession of faith which Col
onel John G. Mahcr of Lincoln has
promised the public for so long when he
should (lie for tho democratic nomination
for governor was given out for publica
tion today In connection with his filing
with the secretory of stato for the nom
ination. Following Is his declaration
"I have filed ns a candidate for gov
ernor on the democratic ticket, because
I believe the voters of tho state' desire
an opportunity to support some candi
date who will plainly state hi? position
on questions vital to the Interests of Ne
braska, unclouded by subterfuge, deceit,
ambiguous declarations and Insidious
means employed by self seekers for the
embezzlement of power. It is with great
Joy nnd ntiadultcrnted prldo wc point ti
the fact that tho Intelligence -of the
American nation Is practically a unit In
support of tho policies of President Wit
son, who la pre-eminently tho man of
tho hour, whose masterful accomplish
ments Imvo earned for him Imperish
able fame as a atatcsmsn and leader of
men, nnd since ho has taken personal
control of tho State department he has
made much progress In settling our tan
gled affairs In Mexico, and now that
our armed forces are on foreign soil he
should havo tho support of eVery loyal
American, nnd I am th favor of his re
nomlnatlon In 1916. It Is reported that a
candidate who contemplates filing will
rely on the popularity of tho president
to pull him through; but he wilt find
that mere Hp service la not going to de
ceive the public. While he Is plotting
to bring about tho retlromont of the pres
ident with but a single term, In order
that a member of his own family may
be elevated to tho place, the democracy
will not be misled by Ills professions of
loyalty to the president.
'The Issues that wilt dlvlda the voters
In the coming election In utter disre
gard of former political affiliation, or pro
be simmered down to regulation or pro
hibition of the sale of llqupr, coupled
with woman suffruge. Any attempt on
the part of candidates to disguise or
alter this will not avail. The reason
that prohibition coupled with woman
suffrago la the lending Issue Is because
a certain democratic boss who Intends to
he a candidate for governor has succeeded
In putting to sleep the petitions which
were In circulation to submit a prohib
itory etatuto to the voters, with the Un
derstanding that It he Is elected gov
ernor, state-wldo prohibition will be
forced through the legislature and he
will npprovo the bill nnd prohibition
leaders aro to uso their Influence for
his candidacy and In behalf of woman
suffrage. And through the promise of
federal patronage ho Is attempting to
enlist tho supjHirt of certain Influential
wet democrats In Omaha, and thereby
lull the liquor Intercuts Into a state of
security, because of the support of these
wet democrats.
"1 am opposed to prohibition and In
favor of temperance and stand squarely
with President Wilson on tho liquor ques
tion. Before the campaign closes I will
prove to the voters of this state that
prohibition would cost the farmers, ac
cording to United States statistical ab
stracts, $200,000,000 In reduction of their
purchasing power, that It would greatly
Increase tax burdens, cripple the public
school system, that It Is opposed to na
ture, a quack remedy for temperance,
contrary to reason, antagnostlo to divine
order, and a breeder of hypocrites, liars,
sneaks and petty criminals. The Slocum
law which we now have gives to the
cities, towns and villages the right, to
each determine for Itself whether or not
It shall permit or prohibit the sale of
liquor, and If elected I pledge to uphold
and enforca that law. and I will veto
any prohibitory bill or any bill that
changes the present liquor law,
"I nm opposed to women voting. In
tho homo woman Is tho brightest star
In man's earthly sky; but harrangulng
tho electorate and trolling her hobble
skirt In the political mire she Is out of
pluce, The right to vote has been no
advantago to women where that right
has been given. We are entitled to be
guided by the experience of other; states.
Wumen have voted in Colorado for
twenty years, and it stands today as
the worst governed commonwealth In the
union, the only state unable to main
Vain law and order and compelled to call
for federal troops to preserve the peace.
Tho experience of Nebraska Is not likely
to be different than Colorado, It we
give women the ballot. The women ot
Nebraska can rely on the chivalry ot
their husbands and sons, and I appeal
to the sensible Nebraska women to stand
firmly for the old order ot women In
tha home, where they are a mighty force,
and not be lured away by the specious
logic ot the suffragette.
"I am In favor ot such an amend
ment to our primary luw as will make
the will of the people supreme. I be
lieve In the right ot the people to rule.
We elected a set of delegates to the na
tional convention at Baltimore, and they
were solemnly pledged by the democratic
voters of Nebraska to support Champ
Clark for president of the United States.
After he had received a majority ot the
votes and his nomination was practically
assured, these men led by one who
secretly sought that nomination for him
self, repudiated the Instructions received
from the people, deserted Clark and
brought about his defeat. Conduct of this
kind was once aptly described by Hon,
W. J. Bryan as nn 'embezzlement of
power.' It Is an embezzlement ot power
and as such It ought to be dealt with
as a felony. It I am elected governor. (
shall recommend a law making the be
trayal ot a public trust punishable by
confinement in the penitentiary, and u
disqualification from ever again holding
office, or ever again being a delegate to
a convention. 1 am aware that following
the betrayal of the Nebruska democracy
a rbsolutlon was forced through -the state
convention endorsing theso recreant dele
gates, but that resolution could no more
blot out the Infamy ot that betrayal
than Pilate could wash the blood of
Christ from off his hands,
"1 am In favor ot abolishing a number
of the ubcIoss commissions we now have,
and am In favor ot the utmost economy
In the administration of state affairs. It
elected governor I shall bo Just and fair
to all, and to the best of my ability
continue the thorough business adminis
tration we now have. I am ready to
'state where I stand on any question ot
I Interest to the people of the state.
I "JOHN O. MAApR."
