When Fred Brodcgaard, the Omaha
Jeweler, came down town Monday morn
ing he round his privte office on the third
floor handsomely decorated with a com
plete set of oak office furniture includ
ing a heavy and spacious desk. The set
is a gift from all the employes ot tho
two Brodcgaard companies, wholesale
and retail, and "Fred" was so pleased
with this evidence of good fellowship
that he immediately promised to arrange
for a plonlc In June. As it happens the
presentation occurred on thn exact date
of Mr. Brodegaard'a arrival In the United

grant, the city council yesterday after
noon Ignored tho protests nnd voted to
sustain Councilman l.evcllc'a ordinance
giving to Bridget Hlgglns property cf
tho city on Thirty-seventh street between
M nnd N streets. Thorn wero protests
filed against tho grant by heavy proporty
owners in tho vicinity of Thlrty-soventh
and M streets, but tho council ignored tho
protests. Edward Cassldy and John Rush,
who own much property In that section
of the city, wero tho men who tiled tha
protest.
"Tho property was worth $5,000, I should
say," said City Attorney Murphy alter tho
meeting. Mayor Hoctor seemed somo-
what surprised nt tho surrender ot tha
land nnd said ho had been under tho Im
pression that It was merely nlleys, It
Is Quito probable that tha mayor will
veto the gift so gratuitously given by
tho council, with the exception of Council
man Tom Alton. Some years ago laml
was surrendered to the city by Bridget
Higgins In return for city land vacated
to Bridget Iltgglns. Now It is said th
city Is asked to glvo back tho land, which
bofore this was ot lenst worth a trade.
Tho ordinance providing for the vacating
ot tho land to Bridget Hlgglns was signed
by Councilman Pat Lnvcllo.
Bids for tho removal of 6,000 cubla
yards ot earth to fill In Hoctor terrac
were offered by Dan Hannon and D. C
Condon, Hannon bid 29 cents and Condon
4K cents. The contract ot Hannon to
pave W atroet from Eighteenth street to
Railroad avenue was referrod to the city
attorney.

In fact tho voter generally express
themselves as pretty well satisfied with
tha way tun schools havo been running
In South Omaha. There Is a strong ten
dency among many.ot tho citizens to dis
regard party lines and vote tor the best
men.
E. It. Leigh, president ot tho school
board, and Georgo Horacck aro up for
ro-eloctlon. They arq both republicans,
but their administration has seen the
schools lifted from debt and the janitors
placed In ctvJJ service. It haa been tho
aim of both men to take tha schools out
of politics. Frank Madison and Otto
