GRAIN AND PRODUCE MARKET
Prospects Around Wheat Market
Arc Quite Bearish.
NO CASH BUSINESS GOING ON
Ne Crop km Writ nn thr Old, U
MnirKlah nnil Hnuln Report
Jlnrc (irnln Than Cnn Hp
Tnkrn Cure Of.
OMAHA. April 20, 1914.
Prospects surrounding the wheat mar
ket are more bearish than they have beon
at any time since the grain was seeded
last fall. The market is in no position
to withstand any Increase in the offer
ings unless prices give way Those sec
tions of 'he great belt that wore reported
as needing moisture were bountifully
supplied Friday night and yesterday, and
those who have been talking of crop
losses because of drouthy conditions will
be obliged to find some other cause for
bulling wheat. Not onlv were the rains
heavy In tho winter wheat belt, but they
wore also leported as free, In tho spring
wheat country, where the seeding will
now be pushed to completion. One ot the
best grain men in the spring wheat
country says never in his recollection has
tho grain gone Into the ground under as
favorable conditions as this year.
The seeding of oats Is progressing rap
There Is no business In cah wheat to
speak of. and this Includes the now crop,
as well as the old. Russia has a great
deal mora wheat than can bo taken caro
of there, and In addition to tho largo
offerings by that country, the Danube
has more wheat than tho more ardent
bears dared to hop for. This grain will
nil como out In due time, and it Is
probable It will bo sold at a price the
United Statcvs wheat will not reach.
There nrc somo complaints coming from
the manipulation of May wheat at Chi
cago, but still tho swings upward and
downward continue. The trade In May.
hovever, has narrowed down to small
proportions, because of the fact that com
mission houses nro advising their cus
tomers to trade In tho more deferred
futures and not In the May at all.
Tho bears seem to have full control
ot the corn market, as speculation
has always been known to be more
uncertain there, there Is a possibility of
something turning up to partially change
the situation, Some on tho bull sldo ot
tho market who smiled when the Argen
tine corn commenced to como toward the
United States havo sold out their long
lines at Chicago, and are now short a
conslderabli amount. And, to make mat
ters more bearish, tho growers In that
country are forcing their grain upon the
markets of the world, and they continue
to meet the views ot buyers, no matter
how low they become.
Idly through out the entire belt, yet thero
are some in tho trade who believe that
the acreage is to bo somewhat reduced.
Tho packers are doubtless endeavoring
to draw the public Into the cash provi
slon market again, as they havo made
goodly purchases ot products on tho

HOGS Receipts were very fair for a.
Monday, about 86 cars, or 5,700 head
being received. This 1 nearly 2,000 head
larger than a week ago, but n trifle
smaller than last year.
Trade opened out slow, with packers
bidding prices that were generally a
nickel lower than Saturday. Shippers and
speculators bought u few loads early that
looked to be lust about steady, paying
as high as $8.65. Seller thought that con
sidering the sire of the receipts prices
ought to be steady all around and they
hold out for the best part of two hours
in. an effort to get steady figures, but
buyers refused to better their early bids
to any great extent and when the supply
Ilinniiy Oianru rticnniu Iiiamw
looked to he Just about a nlkel lower
I than Saturday In other words most ot
the sales were made at a flat 5c decline
although tnme salesmen were able to do
Juat a pinch better than this. Trade was
very dull throughout, and It was nearly
midday before any sort ot a clearance
ss made.
Bulk ot tho sales was made at $S.4&U
8.50. the long string selling at IS. 46. The
average does not show the full decline,
but the general opinion seemed to be
that the quality showed a little Improve
ment over the closing day last week, and
of course, this must be taken Into con
sideration In making comparisons for the
two days.

By 10:30 o'clock quite a few offerings ot
sheep and lambs were still in first hands,
though a very fair proportion of the re
ceipts had been sold and nrlcei were gen
erally steady to lOtflSc lower. During
mo eariy. part ot me torenoon traaers

noted.
Early transactions took In some Mexi

western grades at a range of $7.50i8i7,75. A
two car string of Idaho shorn lambs went
to a feeder buyer at $6.00.
Aged ewes went to the packers at $5.85
J6.&T). Some Colorado ewes were picked
up at $4.50, Shorn wethers nnd yearlings
brought $5.75 and some shorn ewes sold
at $4.75.
Trade being slow and druggy most of
the forenoon, a clearance did not take
place till a late hour, there being some
offerings at 10:30 o'clock that had not re
ceived even a bid.
